Jurong , much like Queenstown & Toa Payoh , was one of the earliest prototypes of a self-contained satellite town in Singapore . Such a concept allowed residents of said towns to work , live & play in small planned communities away from the overcrowded & densely packed metropolitan districts of the city . The region , however , is not the second oldest satellite town in Singapore , as the original entity of Jurong Town was dissolved in 1979 and subsequently replaced with the present new towns of Jurong East & West

There were many places in Jurong where people in the past could gather . One of the places in Jurong is the community center that allows people of different races to gather & do different kind of activity 

Before the damming of Sungei Jurong , the present-day site of Jurong Lake  was once occupied by two streams that split at the junction of the river . These two streams have since ceased to exist . However , these bodies of water roughly marked the present day locations of Jurong East & West , at that time identified as jurong & Peng Kang on colonial era maps respectively
