How will I be assessed?

The assessment of this course will be across four Unit Assessments - one in each skill (Reading, Listening, Talking and Writing) and an Added Value Unit consisting of Reading, Writing and Talking.

Pupils will be introduced to German in S2. This will be studied 1 period per week in rotation with Spanish. The S2 German course will cover the following:

Module 1 - Basics (10 weeks)

• Greetings; days of the week; months; age & birthdays; numbers up to 100.

Module 2 - Family & Descriptions (10 weeks)

• Family members; what siblings I have ; hair colour, length & style; eye colour.

S3 German

If pupils choose to continue their study of German in S3, they will do so with 3 periods per week. They will cover 4 topic areas: Society, Lifestyle, Employability and Citizenship.

Module 1 - Relationships:

• Family members and descriptions; Family relationships; Household tasks and Friendship.

Module Assessment: Speaking & Writing

Module 2 - Lifestyle:

• Food; Healthy lifestyles; Illnesses and advice; Sports; Hobbies; Alcohol and Smoking

Module Assessment: Reading & Listening

Module 3 - Employability:

• Jobs; Places of work; Job characteristics and Job duties

• Where you live; Describing your house; Places in town and town descriptions; Directions; Town vs Country and Environment

How will I be assessed?

The assessment of this course will be across

   
Talking Performance - 30 marks consisting of a 1-2 minute presentation and 5-6 minute conversation. This is recorded a few months before the SQA Exam Diet.

Writing Assignment - 20 marks (scaled down to 15) consisting of a piece of writing on the topic of Education. Pupils are allowed a first draft which they will then receive back with feedback and a correction code in order to complete the final draft that will be sent to the SQA.

In the SQA Exam Diet pupils will sit exams in Reading, Writing and Listening. All four contexts of Society, Learning, Employability and Culture will be assessed across the two papers:
   
Reading and Writing - 1 hour 30 minutes:

• Reading - 3 texts with questions in English - 30 marks

• Writing - Job application E-mail - 120-150 words - 20 marks (scaled down to 15)
   

Listening - approx. 25-30 minutes:

• Monologue - 8 marks

• Conversation - 12 marks

Total = 120 (each skill worth 25%)

• Hair colour, length & style; eyes; personality; physical descriptions; using the third person of verbs.

Module Assessment: Reading & Talking

Module 2 - Town & Home Area

• Countries; nationalities; weather; describing my town; asking for directions; places in town; describing my home; transport; prepositions.

Module Assessment: Reading & Writing

Module 3 - School

• Subjects; giving opinions; opinions of teachers; what I wear to school; describing school uniform; time and timetables; what I eat at lunch; describing my school; giving frequencies; hobbies and sports.

During the course, pupils also complete a research booklet and create posters and other different crafts. There is sometimes even some of these countries' food delicacies to sample!

There are 7 key tasks that will be completed throughout the year. Two of these are in English and the other five are in the language. The key tasks incorporate a mixture of reading, writing and listening and the final key task will consist of a spoken presentation in the language.

Following completion of all assessments, pupils will be awarded with their Level 3 of Level 4 Languages for Life & Work qualification!

All pupils will continue to study French in S2 for 2 periods a week. The S2 course covers:

Module 1 - Town

• Places in town; directions; prepositions; giving locations; opinions of town and going to a café.

Module 2 - School

• Subjects; opinions; describing timetables; morning and evening routine; clothes and school uniform.

Module 3 - Sports & Leisure

• Sports; key verbs - to do and to play; what I do at the weekend; music; sports and weather; hobbies and going to the leisure centre.

Module 4 - Media

• TV genres; films; frequency phrases; sequencer phrases; past tense and giving extended opinions.

Module Assessment: Talking & Writing

Module 5 - Food & Drink

• Breakfast; lunch; dinner; what I have as a snack; healthy eating; fruits; vegetables; going food shopping.

S3 French

Pupils may opt to continue with French for their choice of Language in S3. The course covers:

Module 1 - Relationships

• Describing others; who I get on with; household chores and giving frequencies.

Module Assessment: Reading & Listening

Module 2 - Healthy Lifestyle

• Sports; keeping fit; healthy eating; free time activities; illnesses; injuries; going to the doctor; giving advice and the dangers of smoking and alcohol.

Module Assessment: Talking & Writing

Module 3 - Jobs
