#1. How do developmental scientists study people? What are some advantages and disadvantages of each research method?

Developmental scientists can use the scientific method, which is a process used to identify, observe, and predict different results in situations.

An advantage of using the scientific method includes advances in research not only for yourself, but for other researchers, too.

A disadvantage of the scientific method is there may not be any or much research to do on a topic/problem you have chosen

#2. What ethical problems may arise in research with humans?

Because humans are understandably more difficult to understand and comprehend in a lab scenario, different methods of research must be employed, such as inferences and hypotheses. Some ethical problems that could occur are trauma (mental, emotional, and/or physical), fear, and disclosure between scientist/patient. For example, a scientist could go into a study of a human knowing exactly what is going to happen and the test subject could walk in having no idea what is about to happen.

#1. What purposes do theories serve?

Theories are important because they show us different reactions from different age groups to different situations. A toddler may react differently to a certain situation that a teen may not even care about. Or, vice versa. The purpose of a theory is to learn how the mind works on every level possible, including the age groups.

#2. What are two (2) theoretical issues on which developmental scientists differ?

Cross-sectional studies are samples of different age groups exposed to the same situation to see what similarities and differences occur.

Longitudinal studies are repeated samples of the same group of people. If a group of three 4 year olds were asked to come in for a study, then over a period of time, those same children would be asked to come in again for another study of the same kind.
