“critical reflective practices are particularly important in urban spaces because teachers sometimes contribute unknowingly to classroom management problems,”— PG59

This quote really spoke to me because it points out that if a teacher isn’t willing to learn about their students culture or trends they are into then it can cause problems. I see it as the start to management problems because why would a middle schooler or high schooler want to listen to some one that doesn’t understand anything about them. Critical reflection should be even more important as it was talked about in the chapter how a majority of teachers are white and if they are teaching in a area where white is the minority then there is already tension. Understanding student and their culture can help to ease this. With students feeling more comfortable in the classroom they are better able to learn and management problems won’t be as frequent.

Op“For example, a teacher may refer a Black student to the office for being “loud,” while the same behavior by a White student may elicit a verbal correction.” Pg. 43

Throughout this chapter the author discussed many difficulties that student can face in their home lives and school lives that can have a negative impact on them. These negative impacts can end up enforcing the cradle-to-prison pipeline. With this quote a big issue that can occur in schools is that the teachers can have an unfair bias of students. I see school as a persons first introduction into society and this is how they get a glimpse in how the world runs. If their first experiences is with an authority figure such as a teacher treating them with a racial bias or stereotype then they could assume this is how the rest of the world will see them. So I think the authors intention of speaking about this is to help future educators to think more about their actions in the classroom because if their are any biases that are acted upon can have a hugely negative impact on these students.

“When teachers possess (or have the skills and opportunities to acquire) the knowledge, attitudes, dispositions, beliefs, and skills necessary to meet the needs of and be responsive to their students, equitable classroom management and learning opportunities for all students are possible.” Pg. 20

I see this quote and section as the author trying to explain how if teachers are able to responsively teach then any student has the opportunity to learn. A teacher acting responsively to students can also improve classroom management because as it is also mentioned in the chapter teacher play a big role in how students conduct themselves in school. Since students start to develop their behaviors based off their school life it is important that teachers don’t distance themselves from students and is important for them to get to know their students so they can help them where they need it.

"This means ensuring that everyone in the classroom knows that a lot is expected of them, that lessons are challenging, and that the teacher and students believe that they all can learn and achieve at high levels." PG98

This quote stood out to me because I believe that holding high standards of your students can help them to achieve their full potential. When this is used in a classroom management situation I see it as since students know what is expected of them then they are more likely to try and achieve that. It is even mentioned throughout the chapter that having high standards for your student has a positive impact on their academic success. Having these high expectation of students become a great motivator for students and can become a great tool in creating a strong student-teacher relationship.

"Restorative discipline, on the other hand, stresses that students are members of a school community and that their actions affect other community members“ PG136

Throughout the whole chapter there is an focus on using restorative discipline and I think that this quote sums up the best reason to push the use of it. The author also describes how the use of a punitive discipline system can push students away and feel shut out of a school community. This feeling of being shut can can contribute to the cradle-to-prison pipeline which as educators we do not want to happen. With the use of the restorative students don't feel shut out and can strengthen the student-teacher relationships. This type of inclusion of students is a way to steer students away from the cradle-to-prison pipeline.
