This movie is about a Hollywood director who is accused by the HUAC of having relations with the Communist Party. The scene I choose is a moment when the protagonist is accused of being communist due to his wife relations to the Party. The connections with the events are the Anticommunism in the USA, the HUAC and the blacklist of Hollywood.

In my opinion, the movie tries to show directly the influence of Communist inside Hollywood and how they were looked by the population.

In a scene from TRUMBO we can see how Trumbo is on trial before the HUAC, Trumbo was a Hollywood screenwriter, he was among "the Hollywood Ten", this shows that the HUAC distrusted all famous writers for doing communist activities. This was terrible for the writers since they were blacklisted and had prison sentences, and thanks to that it was difficult for them to find work in the film industry.

(the scene is not complete but it is what I could find) the complete scene in the movie is from minute 1:25:01 to 1:31:00
In the interrogation scene before HUACin "The Front," Howard Prince,Woody Allen, faces the committee members. The HUAC members ask him some questions about his associations with writers and artists who are blacklisted due to their alleged ties to communism. Howard tries to evade the questions and protect his friends, but eventually finds himself cornered(acorralado) by the committee's intimidating tactics. The scene is filled with tension and reflects the oppressive atmosphere and climate of fear that prevailed in Hollywood during the blacklist era
In my opinion it is a very good film that shows what it was like at that time in US. They went against everyone related to communism without mercy.
In the book it would be page 18 that talks about the HUAC and how they went against actors, writers and directors without any kind of mercy.

The movie "Good Bye Lenin!" shows a subjective view of life in East Germany during the Cold War, connecting with our themes of anticommunism and the USA in the 1950s. Although it doesn't directly focus on these topics, it addresses the ideological divisions of the time. In my opinion, the film is subjective rather than entirely objective, prioritizing the human experience over political analysis.

I chose the film Oppenheimer because it is based on real events and it shows the anti-communism of the 50s. The film has several scenes of a security audience that was held for the physicist Robert Oppenheimer, who was the scientific director of the atomic bomb project. At this audience, Oppenheimer is investigated and questioned about possible relations with the communists. This audience was in 1954, after the US government discovered spies in the atomic bomb program and people fear that Reds could be spread in all the country. This is on page 17 in the part that says Read fears.

In my opinion the film is objetive and faithful to what happened in reality.

"Good Night, and Good Luck" is a movie from 2005 that tells a true story from the 1950s. It's about a journalist named Edward R. Murrow and his friends at CBS, a TV station. They're in a really difficult spot because Senator Joseph McCarthy is accusing people of being communists (witch hunting), which causes a lot of fear. Murrow and his team believe in telling the truth, even when it's hard, so they decide to challenge McCarthy on TV. It's a story about standing up for what's right, even when it's risky.

The connection on what we have seen in class is showed at the bottom of page 18 and at the top part of page 19 when it talks about McCarthyism.

What I liked the most about the film was the attitude of Edward Murrow of challenging Senator Joseph McCarthy and promoting free speech during the Cold War era.

Philip and Elizabeth Jennings put themselves in risk when a new neighbor arrives in the neighborhood, who is part of the FBI, an expert in counterspionage with the aim of discovering them. The preassure rises when the couple forms a friendly relationship with the neigbhor, Stan Beeman and they have to protect their kids.

In this scene the secret life of the couple starts to decline when Stan, the expert and friend, questions Philip about being a spy and taht's when Philip tells him the truth about the couple to his friend.

I can relate this TV show with the life of the two scientists, Julius Rosenberg and his wife Ethel, who were executed for passing information about the USA's atomic bomb to Russia.

This is on page 17 of the book.

In my opinion this TV show want tho demonstarte that in that time you couldn't trust in anyone and the spies were all over the country.

WarGames is a movie about a student you hacks the US Department of Defense, thinking that he was playing a game.

In this scene (up to minute 1:20), the Defense System wrongly alerts the United States that the Soviets had launched a Nuclear Attack.

We can see how the general prepares all the systems to contra-attack, while changing to DEFCON 1.

DEFCON (Defense Condition) is a defense protocol of the US. It goes from 5 to 1, 5 being peace time and DEFCON 1 meaning that a nuclear attack was launched against America. (DEFCON 1 was never used in the real life)

In this scene, the constant threat of a Nuclear War during the Cold War is well represented. (as it says on page 2 of the booklet). The scene also mentions the ICBM (Document 9, page 7 of the Booklet)

In my opinion, this scene represents one of the most important features of the Cold War: the fear of a nuclear war that would destroy everything.

In fact, in another scene, the system makes a simulation of a lot of scenarios in which there is a nuclear war. In all the scenarios the result of the system is:

WINNER: NONE

"Rising Hollywood screenwriter Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is blacklisted in the early 1950s Red Scare. Following a drunken car accident, he wakes with amnesia near the small town of Lawson, Calif., where the residents mistake him for Luke Trimble, a local boy declared missing in action during World War II. As Peter helps Luke's father (Martin Landau) and high school sweetheart (Laurie Holden) reopen the town's sole movie theater, questions arise about his true identity and motivations."

In this scene we can clearly deduce that apart from the main story, it critizice the situation that many writers, directors and actors were facing at that moment in the USA. The main character shows us that it isn't fair the fact that he was blacklisted without evidence. Therefore he expressed that he was ashamed of the USA at that moment. He couldn't believe that million of soldiers had lost their lives in order to serve the country and the USA answers by persecuting their own people. He makes a great emphasis in the honor of the soldiers who fought on the war and it makes me think how it was that they got up to this point. To kill, destroy peoples life and lose all the peace the soldiers fought to achieve.

From my point of view, this film not only achieves it's objective of reflecting the situation that some people had to face due to Mcarthism but also it shows us a really interesting story. Talking specifically of the scene, it was very emotional and I think the actor expresses very well the anger of the character.

"The House on Carroll Street" (1988), is a political suspense film that goes into the topic of anti-communism in the United States during the 1950s and the Cold War era. The movie follows Emily Crane, who enters into a web of espionage during the McCarthy era.

The scene I have chosen shows when Emily discovers that her neighbor is under investigation for communist activities, more specifically, he was translating for the USSR. As Emily goes deeper into this, she puts her in a dangerous political and healthy situation . This scene shows how anti-communism and the witch hunts affected the daily lives of Americans, and this demonstrate too, how people can't trust in anyone since anyone can be communist.

The scene begins at the 16.40 minute and finish at 19:20 minute

The Thirteen Days-Nicolás Adad

"Thirteen Days" is a film that deals with the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, showing how President Kennedy and his team tackle the threat of nuclear war while trying to resolve the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The film also shows what these 13 days of extreme tension were like.

The scene I chose goes from minute 13 to minute 17 approximately.

Not only does the scene mark the beginning of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, but it also highlights the vulnerability of world peace as there was a battle between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. In this scene, U.S. leaders are debating possible responses to the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba. The agents are quite worried and tense as they discuss the implications of each action and the risk that this could lead to nuclear war. This scene reflects the great tension that the American agents have and the sense of urgency that the whole crisis has, since the agents must make a decision at a difficult and dangerous moment so that the missiles that belonged to the Soviet Union are not launched against the United States.

In my humble opinion, this scene demonstrates the tension that American leaders had in discussing possible responses to the crisis. The room in which they are meeting reflects the importance of the situation in the decisions that have to be taken since they had a great deal of pressure and in a complicated situation. I could also say that it highlights the difficulty of international diplomacy and the way in which US leaders have to find a solution to a very risky situation. The rest of the film is also shocking, as it highlights the importance to U.S. national security and world peace.

It separately follows the President of the United States, his advisors, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a Royal Air Force exchange officer as they attempt to prevent the crew of a B-52 (following orders from the general) from bombing the Soviet Union and starting a nuclear war.

The movie satirizes and deals with the topics of the Cold War between the two superpowers (USA and USSR), nuclear destruction, and the political battle between both countries in an ironic, comedic, amusing, and different way. Although in the movie the situation is shown in a ridiculous way, it can let us think that one bad decision and the most powerful arm in the hands of the wrong person could lead to the total destruction of the earth and human beings. What could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button?

In this scene, the President of the United States calls the Soviet Premier to explain the desperate situation caused by an unauthorized nuclear attack by a rogue American general. The scene is iconic and comedic. The call is tense and filled with dark humor, as the President tries to convince the Premier of the gravity of the situation while struggling to maintain composure and avoid total nuclear conflict. The scene brilliantly illustrates the madness of war and the absurd consequences of the arms race during the Cold War.

"The spy who came in from the cold" was set during the Cold War, a period of intense political, military, and economic rivalry between Western powers led by the United States and communist powers led by the Soviet Union.

The plot revolves around a British spy, Alec Leamas, who was infiltrated in East Germany, which at the time was controlled by the Soviet Union and its communist allies. This action reflects the espionage that characterized the Cold War, where both sides sought to obtain secret information and gain strategic advantage.

The film explores themes such as betrayal, distrust, and paranoia, which were common during the Cold War. Characters are often forced to question their loyalties and confront moral dilemmas.

The tense and hostile atmosphere between Western powers and communist powers, as well as among spies and undercover agents themselves, contributes to the film's atmosphere.

In this scene, an American pilot ,Harry Brubaker, leads a bombing mission over an important bridge in North Korea.

The film takes the experiences of American soldiers in a distant war and the conflicts between the USA and the Soviet Union, this film also touches on the topic of soldiers' honor and we can associate it with the Truman doctrine.

The point of view of the film focuses mainly on the perspective of the American soldier.

My opinion about this war is that it had a huge impact on the civilian population with many unnecessary victims. This war and differences left a legacy as Korea remains divided

This film is related to the theme that we see in anti-communism class in the United States and is about a group of communist workers who seek to defend their labor rights. In the scene from the 50th second until the end we can see the complaints of the workers and that the anti-communists did not care. In my opinion it is an objective film but one that defends the communists since it is based mainly on that and does not show many scenes of persecution towards them to avoid being harsh with the anti-communists.

This TV show talk about the story of a young East German operative tasked by the Stasi to infiltrate West Germany in 1983. Offering an expansive view, the series examines the differences between the opposing ideologies and economic realities of the divided nation, between the the political and social tensions characterizing the Cold War in Germany.

The scene happens in a supermarket, probably showing West Germany. Everything looks rich and fancy, showing how well-off the West is. This big difference from East Germany shows how much richer and superior the West Germany is compared to the East. We can also see the surprised look on the spy's face when he sees that the supermarket is in better condition than one in East Germany.

In my opinion, what is shown is a truth since people lived much better from the side of capitalism than from communism.

"The Best Years of Our Lives" realesed in 1946. This movie follows three veterans returning home to their small town after serving in World War II and describe their struggles to reintegrate into civilian life in USA.

( i coulden´t find the specific scene that i will redact since is a very old film, but i could put a very similar scene), Al Stephenson, meets with a bank loan officer to discuss financing a loan to buy a home. The loan officer explains how the GI Bill has changed the landscape of home ownership, making it possible for veterans like Al Stephenson to qualify for low-interest loans with little to no down payment. This scene highlights the transformative impact of the GI Bill on returning veterans, providing them with opportunities for education, housing, and employment as they transition back to civilian life after the war.

In the movie “Bridge of Spies,” there’s a crucial scene on the Glienicke Bridge. This bridge connects West Berlin to East Germany. During the Cold War, it became famous for spy exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union.

This scene captures the tensions and delicate negotiations of the Cold War era, as well as the paranoia and distrust between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both sides implemented strategies to advance their interests and avoid direct conflict. It shows how both sides were scared of each other during this time.

Cold War: The bridge symbolizes the intense rivalry between these superpowers.

Anticommunism: The film shows an American lawyer defending a Soviet spy, even when others want him executed.

Post-WWII America: The movie captures the fear of communism and the aftermath of World War II.

While it’s a fair representation, it doesn’t cover all the aspects of the historical events , just this specific part.

X-Men: First Class is a 2011 superhero film based on the X-Men characters appearing in Marvel Comics. The story follows the superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr as they work together to find others like them, whilst also showing Erik’s ulterior motives

Despite the movie, and the scene by extension, taking place in the 1960s and not the 50s, I do still think it’s a valid example, as it shows how quick the US is to jump against potential espionage threats, which was seen with the HUAC and McCarthy. The way this is handled seems rather objective and leaves not much room for speculation. Personally I think they could've gone over the government's mistrust a little deeper, but given that the movie's focus isn't about the war, I think it's arguing against this is a fair standpoint

Timestamp if necessary: 00:50

The trailer of "The Hunt for Red October" shows the intense rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union during the cold war. It is about the search for a soviet submarine, the Red October, which increases the tension among these superpowers. In my opinion, the trailer tends to favor the American perspective, highlighting their technology superiority and heroism. Throughout the trailer, the scenes show innovative submarines and advanced security systems used by the United States Navy, these images emphasize the technological superiority of the United States in the context of the Cold War conflict depicted in the film. There is no specific page or topic that we have talked about in class, the movie simply talks about the Cold War and the relationship between these two countries.
