1.) I think it was important that it was listed that a Graphic Design Freelancer is in charge of marketing, sales, accounts, project management and IT and legal aspects of the job

2.) To cover yourself legally with a contract is extremely important. Both sides need to hold up their end of the agreement. The presenter made it clear that there is going to be a time where you don't get paid and you'll need to use the contract as grounds to address client or take legal action.

3.) It's important to set appropriate prices for living. Charging too low of a price is what most freelancers end up doing.

Since it really looks like life is taking me to a place where freelancing is going to be the way to go, I really took my time watching this video and took copious notes I can refer back to.

My husband is a victim of the if you can work anywhere, you will work anywhere concept. He used to be known as Tim 24/7. Part of why the ability to freelance is important to me is that his travel schedule means I am the only parent a lot of the time, and my son has autism, so even though he is a teenager, I can't really just leave him to his own devices. But I can see where with tablets and smart phones, I could become Laura 24/7, so remembering to treat my personal life as a client will be important.

All the information on the business end of freelancing - taxes, invoicing, etc. - is so important, and is something I really know nothing about. I liked that they said to ask colleagues who they use for things like bookkeeping and taxes, but since I will be moving to a new community next summer, it would also have been nice to have a list of questions to ask the professionals I am considering using. If I am hiring them to do work for me, I don't think it is unreasonable to do a bit of interviewing. I also liked that they did say to ask the people you use whether they have done work for freelancers before.

I liked how they talked about building your professional network. Some of the people my husband works with have expressed an interest in my future career, and would be great contacts to have in a new community, but knowing how to cultivate those relationships as well as develop relationships that I start on my own is going to be key.

1.- Knowing how much you're going to charge for the work you do is very important. He did make a point when he said that sometimes we value ourselves in some way, but we could be wrong and that's why we need a different opinion from friends and colleagues.
2.- Creating a contract is also very important because not everyone is as responsible as we could think. Knowing what to put on a contract and how to create one is as important for you as for the client, that way you both know what's there to offer and receive.
3.- Taxes are a very important topic also because I don't know a lot about it, and since I'm thinking about doing freelance, I have to learn how to work with it for my personal use. He broke it down in different sections and he did mention that doing personal taxes is just like doing it when I was a regular employee, but with a little bit more paperwork.

1. I learned how to properly prepare my portfolio. I need to organize my projects altogether and present them in a professional manner.

2. Making my own professional workspace is another great lesson I learned. I must find where I want to work and what I want to work on. I also need to make time to organize it well so I can work on my future projects.

3. The creation of contracts is very important to me. I learned that by signing a specific contract, the person who signed must follow the correct instructions of the right company. The contract is also negotiable between the writer and the company.

I must say that all of the items discussed in the Freelancing Foundations video were quite important to me. You see, in the future, I believe I will most likely be working as a freelance graphic designer. However, if I were to chose just three significant things from the series, they would be about funding a startup, setting prices, and getting clients.

To fund your start up, one would have to get money in the usual way by finding clients and amass the money needed to start his or her own business or take out loans. However, you may be able to get funding that you do not have to repay in some other ways, such as through gifts, sponsorship, or grants. Nevertheless, loans are the main way that most people get the money they need to fund their startups. The kinds of loans most readily available would be from friends and family or from credit cards.

The benefits of getting a loan from friends and family is that they are private investments in your company, they are specifically for your business, they are sized to your needs, and they usually have simple terms. The disadvantages of private loans is inexperienced lenders, which will not be providing a monthly statement to you, and the lender might expect additional benefits besides repayment from you, such as free work or a piece or some control of your business, The biggest shortcoming of loans from those you know is that if it goes wrong, your relationship with the family member or friend could be ruined.

The benefits of getting a loan through credit cards include more flexible borrowing, getting as little or as much as you like, the lender is professional and well-regulated, and they provide monthly statements for a more straightforward payment schedule. The disadvantages of borrowing from credit lenders is that they are unforgiving if you are having trouble repaying them, the loans can be expensive when you add in the interest and any penalties you amass, and if you are not disciplined, you can over extend yourself and be in over your head in repaying the money.

Setting prices for the design work done by a graphic designer can be difficult. Believe it or not, it seems as if most designers set their prices too low. One reason for this could be that designers are basing their work on a salary by adding up the hourly rates they may have received from a past job. Of course, they forget to add in the expenses that their former employer used to pay and so forth. Your hourly rates should be equal to approximately 2.5 of the salary rate to gain a more robust and fairer price for your services.

Finally, it was interesting to learn how you can get clients for your new business. First, always follow up on all past leads and religiously record the information regarding them, such as who you talked to, when, and why. Next, make a website and beef it up by adding a description of what you do on the home page. It should include the skill you are selling, the industry you will target, and the type of customer you will sell to. You should also include information about your credentials so that people can see why they could trust you with their projects. Finally, make sure your contact information is easily accessible and readily seen on the site. The video also pointed out that it might be wise to acquire work through placement agencies to earn income, especially when you first start to freelance. Some of these positions tend to pay well and are available in your local area.
