  • Students are required to produce written material to demonstrate their understanding.
  • Physically writing includes: holding the writing utensil, stabilizing the paper. visually guiding the hand, moving the writing utensil along the paper, visual recall of the letter, memory of letter formations, and much more.
  • Handwriting requires: 
    • visual perception: ability to understand and interpret visual information
    • neuromuscular abilities: abilities that combine muscular strength and postural control
    • motor skills: require the assimilation and interpretation of sensory information in order to accommodate with an appropriate motor response.
    • social emotional factors: maladaptive behaviors (minimal output or avoidance)
  • Technology advances have made alternatives to handwriting available

    Tasks
    • What are the tasks the student needs to do?
    • What is required in the curriculum? Frequency and type of writing?
    • Would the tasks be more efficient with the use of AT?

    Narrowing the Focus
    • Identify a few tasks that the student needs to do for writing that will have the most impact

    Solution Generation: Tools/Strategies
    • brainstorm strategies and AT tools that may benefit the student in completing the identified tasks in the given environments. 
    • Be sure to list low and high tech AT supports.
    • Select the tools that best match the student, environments, and tasks
    • Limit and prioritize tools 
    Implementation Plan
    • Identify trials and services needed (start date, length of trial, training, etc.)
