I have been told that good writing is composed of your thoughts being clearly stated and organized and having good grammar and punctuation. I have also been told that bad writing has a ton of mistakes grammatically and it doesn't flow well or sounds choppy. 
This article told me that writing can't be defined as good or bad because not everyone has the same opinions of what looks good. I was never taught how to do it or anything (maybe when talking about poetry) but often while reading or shortly after I'll think about what I read and instances where the author said something in a specific way. I enjoy the works of Kurt Vonnegut for this reason, his stories are entertaining & silly on the surface but often have a much deeper meaning that takes a bit of reflection to fully understand. As someone whose brain is often going 7 miles per minute, I don't mind annotating, so when I have a thought about something I read, or run across a word I do not know and want to look up, but also don't want to stop reading just yet I can highlight it or jot it down. I have been a very active reader for as long as I can remember, I've noticed that I read a bit slower than everyone else but that's because I “read for comprehension” as my teacher said. I don't believe I utilize recursive writing, it's also been quite a while since I've written anything that I used the entirety of the writing process. I do get the feeling this isn't going to be my favorite class. So far we’ve been reading articles and things similar to that, which, do not excite me. That's a joke, at least kind of. Good writing must follow all the many rules while still being unique, spectacular, and bursting with personality. I'm unsure if it's apparent but this is problematic to me. I feel that in order for your writing to be "good" it has to check a lot of boxes that I feel put my creativity in a box as well but that is also needed to have "good" writing. So then if my writing isn't “good” why write at all? Bad writing is similar to what I just did, but down words with not much rhyme or reason, using the words "I" and "you", terrible grammar and spelling (pre-spellcheck), and some other rules I forgot or don't yet know. I am responding to this part before reading the article though….I very much enjoyed that article. It encapsulated what I think about writing, while also showing me research proving others think about writing the way I do and that those feelings are valid. As I scientist I know that the way I write a lab report would not be the same way I write a letter to my grandma but some think they should be quite similar. With my emails to the instructor and articles similar to this, I know I can write free-thought, reflections such as this which I wouldn't dare do in my Pre-calculus or Chemistry Lab classes.

This advertisement also uses Kairos, because concern about health, and making choices (specifically with food) that will increase the quality of peoples' lives has become a more prominent concern in more recent years. The use of neutral warm, and some cooler colors gave off a warm feeling of family, togetherness, and home. This is due to the fact that I was never taught what exactly annotating really means. This seems to be a form of logos, it taps into the audiences form of judgement, which is 'Hero's are their to defend the peace of others' and that in itself is very true. But underneath the argument their seems to be a form of irony/annoyance, "asserting their happiness from their safety zones" is a form of pathos, it gives the impression that the people do not necessarily deserve this form of comfort when they themselves are not the ones who fought for it. Thorfinn's whole purpose in life was to kill this man and would do whatever to kill him. When Thorfinn was 15 he would kill indiscriminately he killed Hild's father (the woman holding Thorfinn's hand) and she was seeking revenge. After the death of Askeladd Thorfinn's ideals changed as he chose to never fight and chose peace in his life. He met her and asked for forgiveness but she wanted to kill him. Thorfinn asked for a chance to show he changed; if she wasn't satisfied, he would happily give his life. This is why this manga panel is so important as it shows that after Hild goes on adventures with Thorfinn she sees his change and forgives him. The manga panels mostly use Pathos as we can see Thorfinn's reaction to being forgiven as he is on the ground with his face down as if all that burden is being lifted off. One of my favorite quotes of the series is when Hilt states, "You are a true warrior" as the author has a message that a warrior does not kill but one that finds salvation in oneself and strives to become a better person. The drawings also tell a story as we can see Thorfinss hands with all cuts showing he has not had an easy life and how he is sincere the way he holds Hilts's hand.

The purpose of this commercial was simply to entertain as well as advertise their new product. They had a good effect from this advertisement because their marketing sales went up by 34%. This commercial contains pathos simply because it is a funny commercial and will make you feel happy. This is also considered to have pathos because the mascot is made up of three things that the public generally finds adorable. Towards the end of the ad, you can clearly see emphasis being used with the word combined in bold, green lettering. They emphasized this to show that this drink is definitely worth trying. There is very little contrast in this commercial. The commerce used the pathos appeal to connect with the audience using humor. When looking at the annotated jungle animals in the commercial you see them eating this flaming hot dorriots which lead them gasping for air which eventually is what caused the animals to then start singing. This was used to show the effect of the Doritos being "flaming hot". How can black people function in a professional space? What does "Professional" look like on black bodies? More specifically, black women's bodies. The authors of this article gave instances where they were anxious about what to wear or had moments stand out to them where they had to try harder to look or act "professional" than their white counterparts would have. Stating that professionalism is a predominantly white area of expertise. There were lots of anecdotal examples to provide forced perspective a kind of pathos and ethos. In her anecdote about using slang in her syllabus, she says that it was how she found she could express herself. This is very unique it rapt my attention and made me more interested in what she had to say. It was also effective in making the reader put themselves in her (very uncomfortable) shoes. I would not want to feel forced to wear something uncomfortable or be on the precipice of heat stroke for the sake of professionalism. Especially when it's unnecessary and only forced upon me by societal standards. Although Mckoy didn't use anywhere near as much slang, she also provided a unique perspective. Telling how her illusion of professionalism, dictated how she dressed, presented herself, and presented her information. As well as providing some pathos by making the audience sympathize with her. There's also a blatant use of kairos when she mentions the "black lil boy wearin a hoodie with the phrase “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle”", that was a big thing a few years ago. Shelton used a more traditional writing style that is more commonly seen in academia, but her stories were not really about going on a journey to discover what it meant to be true to herself in a professional setting like Hull and Mckoy's stories were. Instead, Shelton talks about how she was always true to herself from the very beginning, and talks about some comments that she had gotten as a result of that. In this article, Shelton used Ethos by sharing three accounts of interactions she had with people regarding her hair and their assumptions of her based on that. She also used Kairos when she was talking about how natural hair is becoming more widely accepted. I have seen this and its relevance rise in the past few years all over social media since I enjoy learning about different hairstyles and hair care and staying up to date with hair trends. This article revealed to me two main things. One, how we often have a picture of what a particular type of person looks like, and how we should always challenge stereotypes we have created, and two, how conforming to a stereotype hinders creativity. I think that it is important to "dress the part" for lack of a better phrase, however, I don't think that "dressing the part" means looking like everyone else. It is important to look clean and professional of course, but that does not mean that someone should have to wear a suit if that is not their style. I think it is important for a person to dress in what makes them comfortable, so they can perform their job the way they need to. This makes the courtroom doubt her credibility and ability since she contrasts very harshly with the stereotypes and expectations of a lawyer.
- Elle is failing to convince the jury at first but as the witness makes the statement that she got a perm, it sets the conditions right to make her claim that wins the case (Kairos).
- Elle uses logic and past knowledge about perms to make the claim that the witness could not have been in the shower as stated because water ruins the perm and the witness has her perm in tact.
- Though she doesn't cater to her audience, her background and preppy personality makes her claim very credible and convincing to the courtroom which allows her to win the case.

An image that depicts a very sad feeling that I believe can be felt in most of the panels throughout the manga. This one in specific is an amazing example of pathos. It shows a child, who is told not to look for who it is she is searching for the last two panels so the vast beyond in which she is walking, not a soul in sight just the big bright moon showing just how small her existence is. The black and white contrast really help display the lonely emotion. It also allowed her to express herself the same way she used in her syllabus. 

Sheltons use of language allow for us to understand her environment. I like how shelton has always been sure of herself throughout her text. Her language was very aware of what was going on around her at that time. For example her going to the salon and wanting something different than straight hair for her interview. She knew that most people saw it as professionalism to have it straight and she challenges the idea of it and wears her hair naturally. 

McKoy's language was similar to Hull's as it was very casual and fun to read. She also uses Kairos in terms of how natural hair is becoming more accepted in the professional environment. What I learned about professionalism is that there is no true style of it. Hull's anecdote says that your suit is your credentials and that really resonated with me in terms of professionalism. " The rhetorical context of this text is that letting other peoples standards get in the way of her true self. Within her text she uses ethos when she expresses the judgement she encountered with what she wore from different peers and students. She also uses Kairos when she finally accepts her true identity and doesn't let other peoples opinions affect her and how she chooses to dress.

She starts off by saying, "What some call their reputation, I prefer to call my brand. I say this because I am a firm believer that we are all walking talking billboards in some form or fashion. And for some, our bodies can become prime real estate to showcase and exemplify other branding initiatives, goals, and outcomes." I had never thought about seeing people as walking and talking billboards before and I thought it was a really neat take on how we can view others "professionally". Which guides me to answering what "professionalism" is; it is honestly whatever you want to define it as. For example, in McKoy's writing she expresses her thoughts through ethos and says that she has always been taught in order to look and be professional you need to wear a suit and put on a front that is pleasing to everyone. Later on, she finds out that sticking to the "professional" status quo is exhausting and it doesn't change the amount of knowledge that she has to share with others.
