The New York Journal states that, "The Journal’s special correspondent at Havana, cables that it is the secret opinion of many Spaniards in the Cuban capital, that the Maine was destroyed and 258 men killed by means of marine mine or fixed torpeda. This is the opinion of several American naval authorities. The Spaniards, it is believed, arranged to have the Maine anchored over one of the harbor mines. Wires connected the mines with a... magazine, and it is thought the explosion was caused by sending an electric current through the wire." This is all based of of opinions vs the New York Times which states, "Secretary Long, who when asked as he was about to depart for the day whether he had reason to suspect that the disaster was the work of the enemy, replied: “I do not. In that I am influenced by the fact that 
Capt. Sigsbee has not yet reported to the Navy Department on the cause. He is evidently waiting to write a full report. So long as he does not express himself, I certainly cannot. I should think from the indications, however, that there was an accident – that the magazine exploded." This quotation is actually reported from Secretary who had communication through telegrams about events that occurred during the sinking of the Maine.

Cuba was trying to gain its independence from Spain. Also one of the causes was the explosion and fire of the USS Maine which was one of four of the best ships of the US. The video states, "American investors by 1880 had spent millions of dollars in Cuba." "In Cuba itself movements for independence from Spain had a very long history. By 1880 the Cuban insurrection had become a crises for the Spanish government." " On January 28, 1898 The USS Maine entered the Havana Harbor in Cuba. The Maine was one of four state of the art battleships in the growing US fleet. The effects of the US War with Philippines was that the war broke out causing hundreds of lives, soldiers were then torturing the people, and then the Philippines retaliated with a guerilla war. Eventually hearings were held to discuss the war between the US and the Philippines. The article states, "

They condemned the policy of the US administration in the Philippines. They denounced the slaughter of the soldiers and the Philippines. They wanted congress to concede to the Philippines to give them back their independence which they had fought so hard for and they ultimately did not approve of the US trying to own and control the Phillippines and their country. "We hold, with Abraham Lincoln, that "no man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent. When the white man governs himself, that is self-government, but when he governs himself and also governs another man, that is more than self-government-that is despotism."

"The annexation of Hawaii now is accomplished, so far as the legislative branch of the Government is concerned. 
Unexpectedly, the resolution providing for the annexation of the islands was brought to a vote in the Senate late this afternoon, and it was passed by the decisive vote of 42 to 21." Although Hawaii was voted in as an annexation, Mr. White the democrat of California was in opposition. "He addressed the Senate only briefly, urging strongly that the question of annexation ought to be submitted to the Hawaiians themselves. He thought it was not good policy or evidence of broad and enduring statesmanship to adopt the resolutions in their present form, and although he realized fully that they would pass, he believed the future would justify the action of those opposed to them."  The effects of the takeover of Hawaii gave the US more control.
