“The thing that brings people together to have the courage to take action on behalf of their lives is not just that they care about the same issue, it’s that they have shared stories. And he told me that if you learn how to listen to people’s stories and can find what’s sacred in other people’s stories, then you’ll be able to forge a relationship that lasts”. 

What this means to me 

What this statement means to me is that being able to read other peoples stories and being able to relate and connect with those stories and having those stories give you courage and can help give you the confidence that you needed for your own life. 

The house on Mango Street.

The house on Mango street was a short novel that told the story of a girl Esperanza who all her life wanted to live in a beautiful house that her parents always promised her. When her parents finally bought a house it was nothing like they promised her. The house on Mango street is where Esperanza lived her childhood/ adolescence years there. Her experience on Mango street growing up was related to almost all of us since it was coming of age. The experiences of that time of her life she had up and downs and the hard times she had help shaped and built her into a strong young woman. 

I Too

I Too is a poem about a boy who is dealing with physical identity issue has he is sent to the kitchen to eat alone because his skin is darker than his other brothers. In the poem he expresses how he too can be American no matter what his skin color is. This story relates to my main idea in the sense that many who are going through problems of physical identity isolation can relate to and feel a sense of courage as this story shows that the charter isn't going to let people make him feel less american because of his skin color.

Everyday Use

This was a short story of a family and a young girl who badly wanted to change her identity.Dee’s mother and sister Maggie seemed to be stuck in past were Dee couldn't bare to live that lifestyle. Dee came home to visit her mother and sister, and told her mother that she had changed her name to a more africain name she had made a statement that “ she couldn't bare it any longer, being named after the people who oppressed me.” In the story you can see how bad Dee wanted to be someone completely different and have her own identity especially in the era the story took place while being a young black woman.

A&P

This was a short story about a boy Sammy who is in his teenage years dealing with pleasing his adult figures until the day a few girls walked into his workplace. While the girls were in the store he worked at, his manager had made some of the girls feel bad and upset. After seeing what happen Sammy stood up for the girls by telling his boss by what he said to those girls was not right nor nice, and the aftermath caused Sammy his job but at the end he didn't care Sammy felt good standing up not only for the girl but to his boss an adult. 

My favorite reading 

This semester has to be Eveline. I choose Eveline because I can relate to her story where she had all the responsibility of taking care of her family. Throughout high school I worked two jobs and took care of my grandfather and younger siblings. I defenlyt took on a lot of responsibility early on in my adolescent years which is why I am how I am today being young a 22 engaged two step children and buying a house. The difference is that I choose to move away and decided to start my own life.
