The Will to Survive

"The first rays of light it came alive in me. hope. as things emerged in outline and filled with color, hope increased until it was like a song in my heart"(Yann Martel 119).

This quote shows that in a situation when stranded when the body and mind are focused 100% on the need to survive the smallest things such as the sun marking a new day can be a morale boost, it is the smallest events of everyday life that seem like victories. Just like Pi seems to use the sun as a marking to when his family will be there, that thought keeps him going and gives him the will to survive.

"My family. they would have been picked up in another life boat. I only had to ensure my survival for the next few hours until rescue"(113).

This quote shows that no matter how unlikely rescue is the human mind will do whatever it can to push itself to survive even create delusions of being saved or even in Pi's case, being in denial of his families death so he can have something to fight for and to live another day.

(pg. 27)
"What a terrible disease that must be if it could kill God in a man." (pg. 28)
Mr. Kumar is very non-religious because he doesn't believe in any higher power, he thinks science is the foundation of the world.

Science-absorbed

"When Mr. Kumar visited the zoo, it was to take the pulse of the universe, and his stethoscopic mind always confirmed to him that everything was in order, that everything was order. He left the zoo feeling scientifically refreshed." (pg. 26)

Mr. Kumar is very science-absorbed because he thinks everything relates back to science, and that science is what created everything.
