French and Indian War

It all started with the French and Indian War which was fought between the French, the British, along with some Natives over land in North America. The French started to build forts around British territory which angered the British. The British sent troops up to these forts in order to drive the French out, this would result in a 7 year war fought around the globe. Most of the Natives sided with the British during war due to most French treating them as partners instead of savages. But not all fought for the British, one Native Chief named Tanacharison helped the British drive the French out of the land. After 7 years, the British won the war against the French which caused the British to gain the most of American land and the French to mainly use all of their land. After the war, England was in debt and looked to the colonists for help which would trigger one of the biggest revolts in the history of the world

Causes of the American Revolution

Many things led up to the revolution including the Quartering act, the Proclamation of 1763, and the Boston Massacre. The Quartering Act stated that British soldiers could stay in other people's homes without permission which angered the colonists because they thought it violated their property rights. The Proclamation of 1763 stated colonists couldn't settle land west of the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists saw this as an act of tyranny when in reality the act was issued in order not to cause trouble with the natives. One final reason is because of the Boston Massacre. The Boston Massacre was a result of a riot formed by patriots where they threw rocks, sticks, and hard objects at British soldiers. Out of fear, the British soldiers began to shoot at the rioters. The patriot newspapers labeled it a massacre and used it as propaganda for the patriot movement. These are a few reasons the American Revolution started.

The Declaration of Independence was a document declaring that the 13 colonies were an independent state and are no longer subject to Great Britain. After being subjected to Britain's rule for so long, the 13 colonies agreed to succeed from Britain. They didn't want to be subject to enforced taxes and the tyrannical government. This caused the 13 colonies to become one union and was another reason the colonists and Britain were inches away from war.

Valley Forge was a camp in Pennsylvania used by the Continental Army during the winter of 1777-1778. The Continental Army chose to got to Valley forge because the British were occupying Philadelphia and the army wanted to keep a close eye the British. While there, many of the soldiers contracted diseases like small pox. To combat the disease, they used inoculation where they had to add blood of an infected soldier to healthy soldier. This act ended up working and it saved many. The soldiers there trained and recieved discipline to help improve their skills as soldiers. Valley Forge actually helped improve the soldiers of the Continental Army.

The first battle was at Lexington and Concord, Massachsetts where no is sure who initiated the battle because no is sure who fired first. The Americans ended up winning the battle and it became known as the first battle for independence. By the end of the battle 73 British were dead along with 8 minutemen.Another impotant battle was the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776 where the British planned to capture New York City by attacking the ports of the city.At the end of the battle, the British had won and captured New York City had. There were 2,350 casualties, 2,000 American and 350 British. Another important battle was the Battle of Trenton on December 25 1776 in Trenton where the Americans planned a suprise attack on the Hessians by crossing the Delware River. The plan worked and they captured 1,000 Hessians and killed 22 Hessians. The Americans won and the outcome highly boosted American moral. The final battle took place at Yorktown, Virginia from September 28-October 19 1781. The Americans and British just met up at the town and began to fight.

The Articles of Confederations was the first governing document of the United States. One strength it had was the navigation act which told the citizens how territories became states. A weakness the document had was that the congress couldn't collect taxes from the states which means they couldn't fund government programs. After a money shortage in 1786, a group of Massachusetts farmers led by Daniel Shays led a rebellion where they seized the weapons from the National Arsenal and closed down courthouses. This rebellion convinced the people that the nation was falling apart.

Important Compromises

There were three very important compromises after the American Revolution, the Great Compromise, 3/5 Compromise, and on how to elect a president. The Great Compromise was introduced when congress couldn't agree on how government should be structured. Roger Sherman introduced the Connecticut Plan which said there should be two houses of congress, reprsenatives based on the population, and two senates per state. When congress couldn't agree on whether or not to count slaves as a full person when counting a state's population, James Madison introduced the Three-Fifths compromise which stated slaves would be counted as 3/5 of a person. When congress couldn't decide how a president could be elected, the framers came up with the electoral college which stated that states have as many electors as the number of represenatives and senators they have and which candidate reaches 270 electoral votes first.
