Paul Cook, a Republican U.S. Representative since 2013, was a member of California state assembly from 2006-2012. He was on the Yucca town council from 1998-2006. Paul Cook is 75 years old, he was in the military for 26 years. He is married to Jeanne Cook. One platform that is important to Paul Cook is tax reform laws. According to the "cookhouse.gov" Paul is very against increasing taxes and will impose all of it. They say that he voted for H.R. 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which will give families more savings. Paul Cook, the incumbent of California district 8, is running for reelection in 2018. Also on the political spectrum he would be close to Donald trump in the upper right quadrren. He has no scandalsHe is leading with 41.4 percent in the polls.

Tim Donnelly was a member of the California State Assembly. He was also a small business man before he was a big politician. Tim Donnelly is 52 and he is a Republican. He married Rowena Donnelly, and they proceeded to have five kids together. The "Principals of Tim Donnelly" state that Tim will not oppose all tax increases but he will try to lower taxes for every Californian. He believes this is one way for economic growth to begin. Unlike Paul Cook Tim is "less republican" so he would be not as conservative/not as much on the conservative side.Because of this Tim is not as high as Paul on the political spectrum, but he is also in the upper right quadren of the political spectrum. He has no scandals. Tim Donnelly is lagging behind Paul Cook in the polls by 22.8 percent.

We believe that Paul Cook will win the congressional race for the 8th district of California. This because he won in the primary by 17.9 percentage points. He is also the incumbent, meaning that his name is well known, leading to more votes in his favor. In addition to that he won in a poll done by New York Times, getting 41.4% of the votes. Paul Cook has also raised $909,303.19 from donors, PACs and Super PACs; which is more than his competitors. These advantages lead us to believe that Paul Cook with be the next Congressman for the 8th district of California.

This will strongly affect the outcome of the elections as Donald Trump is very, very well known and many people in this region would vote for him. Senator Rand Paul endorsed Tim Donnelly, saying on Facebook that Tim Donnelly, "will fight to defend our God-given natural rights, our Liberty and our Republic."

As of September 30th, Paul Cook raised $909,303.19, and Tim Donnelly raised $161,606. This will give Paul Cook a strong advantage as he will be able to spend more on advertising. We think Paul Cook was able to raise a lot more because he's the incumbent.

He is calling for a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and he wants out-of-state insurance companies to stay out of California.
3. He wants to minimize the power of the federal government.
4. Tim Donnelly wants to end Common Core teaching in schools. He feels like it is a threat to the students' success.

Tim Donnelly is, in general, less conservative than Paul Cook is. Even though most of his views reflect a Republican stance, he tends to be more lenient than Paul Cook. For example, the idea of minimizing federal government is not a trend in Republican voters/government officials. On the other hand, like Paul Cook, he supports patrol and security against illegal immigration.

Paul Cook's key messages:
1. He wants to enforce security in airport. He agrees with Trump's 2017 travel restrictions policy.
2. Paul Cook says he will work to lower taxes if he is reelected, as he believes lowering taxes will result in more jobs.
3. He said, "The best gun advocates are always responsible gun owners." Paul Cook strongly believes that all people should have access to guns.
4. He believes that illegal immigration should end completely, and he disagree with President Trump's executive amnesty.
5. Paul Cook wants to develop the U.S. so it's larger than it is now. He believes a larger army will result in less terrorism and a safer country.

All five of these principles are in line with the party platform. Many Republicans believe that greater security with a greater army will help our country. They also tend to believe that we should lower taxes, end immigration and let people have the right to bear arms.

In California, they use a "jungle primary" system. This means that the top two people elected in the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their party. According to sbsun.com, the democratic candidates, Marge Doyle and Ramirez-Dean, were eliminated from the race because neither of them raised enough money. This article argues that a Super PAC, founded by Chris Mann, promoted Ramirez-Dean because they feared Marge Doyle. By helping Ramirez-Dean, Chris Mann took many voters away from Marge Doyle. Because the district tends to favor Republicans and the democrats were split between two candidates, in the end two Republicans won in the primaries.
