Direct Characterization: Katniss is independent, brave, protective, and resourceful.

“I protect [Prim] in every way I can, but I’m powerless against the reaping. The anguish I always feel when she’s in pain wells up in my chest and threatens to register on my face. I notice her blouse has pulled out of her skirt in the back again and forced myself to stay calm”. (Collins) -Katniss Everdeen.

She's adaptable and quick on her feet in the face of danger.

"I’m fast. I can sprint faster than any of the girls in our
school although a couple can beat me in distance
races. But this forty-yard length, this is what I am
built for." (Collins) -Katniss Everdeen

Peeta is artistic, a pleaser and very affectionate towards Katniss. He only comes through Katniss' eyes since the book is written in the first person of view.

“It's not necessary. My nightmares are usually about losing you,” he says. “I'm okay once I realize you're here.'" -Peeta telling Katniss his nightmares (Collins)

Peeta pleasing the crowd:

The people begin to point at us eagerly as they
recognize a tribute train rolling into the city. I step
away from the window, sickened by their excitement,
knowing they can’t wait to watch us die. But Peeta
holds his ground, actually waving and smiling at the
gawking crowd. He only stops when the train pulls
into the station, blocking us from their view.
He sees me staring at him and shrugs. “Who knows?”
he says. “One of them may be rich.”

Here's a quote of Peeta being Artistic when painting himself as a tree:

I look more critically at the design on Peeta’s arm. The
alternating pattern of light and dark suggests
sunlight falling through the leaves in the woods Somehow the whole thing — his skill,
those inaccessible cakes, the praise of the camouflage
expert — annoys me. -Katniss Everdeen (Collins)

He cries out and reflexively releases Cato who slams back against him. For a horrible moment, I think they’re both going over.
