         <title>Sugar Act - 1764</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>British Action: The Sugar Act taxed sugar, molasses, and other imported goods into the American colonies, mainly from non-British sources. The British imposed this act to help pay off debts from the French and Indian War. There was indirect taxation, and the amount of sugar consumed was rationed. </p><p><br/></p><p>Colonial response: The colonists were outraged and responded with written protests and boycotts on some occasions. Then came an increased resentment against Britain. </p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>British Action: After the French and Indian War, Great Britain maintained an army in the colonies. This act forced colonies' assemblies to provide free houses and provisions to these soldiers. They stayed in government facilities. </p><p><br></p><p>Colonial response: Colonists were angry and protested. However, there was nothing they could do about it. </p><p><br></p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <title>1765- Stamp Act</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>British Action: The Stamp Act taxed colonists for legal and commercial documents. Citizens were required to purchase and use specially stamped paper for legal documents, newspapers, licenses, and other publications. The Stamp Act was made to recover from the high costs of the British troops stationed in North America after the French and Indian War. </p><p><br/></p><p>Colonial response: The colonists responded negatively and protested violently. When the Stamp Act Congress met, they began the boycott of British goods. They were really upset. </p><p><br/></p><p>The image above is the stamp they were forced to add to documents. </p>]]></description>

         <title>1766 - Declaratory Act</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>British Action: The Declaratory Act was passed when England repealed the Stamp Act. The Declaratory Act was a statement of England's right to rule the colonies in any way they wanted. The Declaratory Act was a reminder that Britain still maintained control over colonial policies.</p><p><br/></p><p>Colonial response: Even though colonists were pleased with the repeal of the Stamp Act, they were still upset. They still protested other British-imposed laws.</p>]]></description>

A group of Boston patriots destroyed a huge shipment of tea which then later became the Boston Tea Party.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>British Action: This act was&nbsp;designed to punish the American colonies, the Boston Port Bill of 1774 was the British government's response to the Boston Tea Party.</p><p><br/></p><p>Colonial Response: The law was seen by the colonists as an unfair penalty that was directed not only at Boston but at all the American colonies. As a result, they came together to help Massachusetts by donating food, goods, and cash to help Boston residents get through the port's shutdown.</p>]]></description>

Widespread protests and organized boycotts of British goods. Letters protesting the act were published in the newspapers. </p>]]></description>

         <title>1774-Administration of Justice</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>British Action: Part of the Coercive Acts, often known as the Intolerable Acts, the Administration of Justice Act was enacted in 1774 by the British government with the intention of protecting royal officers stationed in the American colonies. If the governor of Massachusetts thought that British officials or troops facing criminal charges could not be given a fair trial in their own province, this law permitted the governor to move the cases to England or another colony.</p><p><br></p><p>Colonial Respose: Colonists were really mad about this act and were pushed closer to rebellion. They nicknamed it the "Murder Act" because they thought the British would start making violent crimes.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>British Action: This act allowed Catholics to preach up North. Quebec's French inhabitants could keep their language, Catholic faith, and civil law. Colonists opposed it because it gave Quebec more land in the Ohio River Valley and encouraged the spread of Catholicism, which worried the mostly Protestant colonists.</p><p><br/></p><p>Colonial Response: Colonists protested and eventually this anger and fear helped to spark the American Revolution.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>British Action: One of the Intolerable Acts, that the British Parliament imposed in reaction to colonial instability was the Quartering Act of 1774. This law ordered the American colonies to&nbsp;house and feed British soldiers, not only in barracks but also in private residences, hotels, and other structures as needed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Colonial Resposne: Colonists were upset about this rule. It was seen as a violation of personal liberties and privacy. It started to cause tensions between Britain and the colonies.</p>]]></description>
