Hi, my name is Nicole Samantha Quizo. I’m a student at Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao under the BS Psychology program. Music has always held a special place in my heart, transcending the boundaries of language and reaching the depths of my soul. From an early age, I have been captivated by its ability to evoke emotions, inspire creativity, and provide solace in both joyful and challenging times. For this reason, I cannot go outside the house without my earphones as I love listening to music wherever I may be.

Original Philippine Music (OPM) is a treasure trove of musical creativity and cultural expression that holds a special place in the hearts of Filipinos. OPM reflects the cultural identity and authenticity of the Filipino people. It tells stories, expresses emotions, and captures the essence of Filipino life and experiences. OPM artists draw inspiration from their surroundings, weaving elements of local traditions, values, and languages into their music. This distinctiveness sets OPM apart from other genres and allows it to serve as a reflection of the Filipino spirit.

Uses and Gratification Theory

The Uses and Gratifications Theory is a communication theory that examines how audiences use media to fulfill their needs and desires. This theory suggests that individuals actively seek out specific media content to satisfy particular gratifications or motivations. When applied to Philippine popular culture, the Uses and Gratifications Theory helps us understand how Filipinos engage with media and the purposes they seek to fulfill.

An example of this is Ben&Ben, my favorite band. Ben&Ben is a popular folk-pop band from the Philippines known for their heartfelt and introspective songs. Their music resonates with listeners by offering various gratifications and fulfilling specific needs. Their music provides emotional gratification to their listeners. Many of their songs tackle universal themes such as love, heartbreak, self-discovery, and personal struggles. By delving into these emotional experiences, their music strikes a chord with the audience and offers catharsis, comfort, and validation.
