Historical background

‘Pride and Prejudice’ was written during the Georgian era (1714–1837) into which Jane Austen was born into. It was a period of transition along with Britain’s constant warfare abroad. It was the beginning of the Industrial Revolution that saw the shift in arts and letters to an era of romance. Also, it is the period in which the first whispers of feminist and abolitionist concerns were heard in Western Europe.

Jane Austen completed the original manuscript of Pride and Prejudice, titled “First Impressions”, between 1796 and 1797, but it was published only in January 1813

At that time people got married by calculation. Getting marrying for love was a rarity for people of that time. It is to this problem that the book is devoted: the heroine stubbornly defends her right to control her feelings. Perhaps with this work, the writer wanted to show that defending her desire to marry for love is not so bad. Yes, there will be misunderstanding on the part of society, but on the other hand, there will be no difficulties in living in the company of a person who is not particularly loved.

The idea of the novel is that all our human prejudices are irrelevant when it comes to love. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett became entangled in their own pride and prejudices, but having managed to overcome them, they became absolutely happy.
In addition, the writer put strong-willed character traits in her heroine, setting an example for the ladies of her age.
Elizabeth knows her own worth, despite the poverty of the family. She is not going to sell herself at the brides' fair, just to get a better job. she had a dignity that she did not forget for a moment.

By depicting such a virtuous and independent heroine, the author taught a lesson to his contemporaries.
