Ms. Gruwell's teaching philosophy is to a greater part based on progressivism and reconstructionism. She used real life experiences to engage her learners to effectively learn and social issues are dealt with through dialogue with the learners.

Example from the movie (00:41:12)
instead of teaching , to connect with her she made them stand up and play a line game. She put a tape on the floor in the middle of the classroom and asked her learners to stand behind it. She then asked a series of personal questions to the learners and if it applied to the learners they would stand on the line. She made the lesson interactive and the learners felt engaged at the same time finding out who and what they have experienced in their lives.

Deemed by fellow teachers that Erin was wasting her time by teaching learners that are gangster's, she embarked on a journey first because she was passionate about teaching and she saw and understood the learners backgrounds. She connected with them and against all odds she managed to understand each and every learner in her class and made it a priority to teach them that it is not about where you come from but where you see yourself and managed to win them over because they saw she has their best interests at heart even when the schools management did not believe in her she believed in herself and she conquered though it came with sacrifices to her marriage, her finances and her being hated by her colleagues. She created a lesson plan that was suitable for her learner's.

"Oh captain my captain" (00:12:33)
After taking them outside the classroom, the learners are puzzled as to what is happening as they are used to the traditional ways of doing things, being in the classroom and the lessons always being teacher-centered.

Keating is a progressive teacher who uses methods that other teachers such as the Latin teacher find disruptive because he walks in Keating's class thinking there was no teacher and found learners ripping out pages on the textbook(00:23:05-00:24:09)

Keating employs experimental methods of teaching and to a greater part also uses existentialism because he inspires his learners to choose their own purpose and appreciate themselves as unique individuals
