A couple years ago, my sister told my family that she wanted to start playing golf. We both played softball at the time and didn’t think she would want to play a different sport. My parents were very accepting and open to her trying new things. They signed her up for golf lessons and she started learning. Soon she was doing very well and was enjoying herself. When I first thought of her playing golf I thought she was joking, but then I realized she was serious. Some people at our middle school would make fun of her for playing golf because they thought it was not a real sport. She stayed strong and held her head up high and kept playing. Eventually, she stopped playing golf and went back to softball, but it was a great experience for her. 

My parents do not care if I follow in their footsteps because they want us to have options. If we were only allowed to follow one career path in the future, we could not be intreseted in it. My parents want me to be passionate in what I do and not do something because I have to. I don’t think it’s right to make kids follow in theuir parents footsteps because it isn’t fair to the child. This quote’s meaning is that the only thing a parent can leave with their children is what’s inside their minds. With what we’ve read so far, Sonny is interested in building rockets, but he lives in a place where the only jobs are coal miners. Sonny probably got into rockets because he read lots of Science Fiction books. His passion for science and rockets can never be taken away from him. His education has let Sonny found his passion. His passion shouldn’t be taken away just because he lives in a secluded area. His father also could pressure him to follow in his footsteps which could be challenging for Sonny especially if he isn’t passionate about it. This quote can give us some foreshadowing of what could happen in the future.

This quote’s meaning is that when you get handed a book, you have to have the wanting to learn what’s inside of it. If you read a book that you aren’t interested in, you aren’t going to understand the meaning behind it. Sonny loves to read about Science Fiction. He usually reads a book for school and one for his own enjoyment. Reading books made him realize he wanted to build rockets and do something out of the ordinary. He let his imagination run wild and do the unexpected.

 In Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam, Sonny’s thoughts on family are that family are the people you can count on no matter what. In Sonny’s life, he is not super close with his father as he is with his mother. His mother is his main support system and always believes in him. On the other hand, his father seems to like his older brother Jim better then Sonny. Sonny’s mother shows her love as she, “ took me from Poppy and I clutched hard to her shoulder, my heart beating wildly from an unidentified terror.” (Hickam 1:13). At the time, Sonny was put on his Poppy’s lap, but he didn’t have legs. This scared him because he hadn’t been exposed to something like this. His mother knew this and immediately took him out of the situation and made sure he was ok. Later, Sonny’s father starts to accept Sonny’s love for rockets with a lot of convincing from Sonny’s mother and her friends. They think it’s a great idea that Sonny builds rockets, so he can get out of Coalwood. Sonny’s father disagreed and only cared about football, but then he was convinced to help Sonny find a safe place to build his rockets. Sonny’s father tries to help Sonny by stating, “If I get you this scrap lumber—and even scrap lumber is expensive, young man—if I do this thing from here on I want the rocket-launching business out of sight and out of mind in Coalwood. Understood?” (Hickam 7:108). This is the time when Sonny’s father finally helps Sonny reach his dreams by finding him a safe place to launch his rockets. Maybe, his father is finally seeing some potential in him. Without Sonny’s family, he wouldn’t have the support and help to follow his dreams and fly rockets. In conclusion, Sonny’s family is his major support system and will help him follow his dreams no matter how big they are.
