Movement Affecting Education

From the article by R & L they describe the movement of people and cultures have greatly affected education around the world. They talk about in the last 20 years that there is a huge surge of immigrants and refugee, and how international students have increased to over 2.2 million around the world. I think that this type of movement from people around the world is a positive thing that can open peoples minds around the world. They talk about how now more than ever people are open to immigrants coming into their country but feel at the same time that their culture and way of life is being attacked, and feel pigeon holed to a new wave of culture that needs to be adopting the new cultural themes that are coming in. In terms of education and economy of countries they speak of "Multiculturalism" and the idea of cultures from different people coming to together to create a unique society. They talk about how Multiculturalism has been affected in the economy, education and they way people even communicate with each other. In terms of econocmic they speak of multiculturalism as the right of immigrants no matter what peoples background is or what their history of where they cam from, that it should be their right to provide and thrive in that economy. I think this ties into the ways it has affected education as well. In order to positively provide in an economy as subject needs to be educated on how that space works. I agree with R&L when they talk about how education has changed with the rise of Multiculturalism in the fact that education systems are more open and aware of other students cultures and try to include them or at least allow them to be relevant in the curriculum. I think this is a key point in one keeping students engaged with the material by keep it relevant to what they know, as well as preparing them for the open mindedness that is needed for an economy of multiple cultures to flourish. Some examples of how education systems are encouraging students to embrace other cultures are the advertising and encouragement for studying abroad. Another example is having professors or educators attend summits or conferences of international educators to try and learn new ways to adjust curriculum and techniques that can allow them to be better educated on other cultures and how other countries are teaching students.

Examples of Education Systems responding to Multiculturalism

One of the ways R&L describes of education systems responding to Multiculturalism that I personally have experienced in school is the encouragement to study abroad. At the university I attended for undergrad had 2 different fairs/seminars per semester that talked about students at the university being able to easily study abroad and the advantages it could have. They had a program especially for students in the business program being able to study at an accelerated program in Japan. This program would coincide with the program here in the states where you could take 3 years of business school credits here in the states and 2 in Japan, didn't have to be in that order but at the end of the 3-2 program they would have not just an undergrad degree but also a MBA. When looking deeper into why they were so encouraging of this particular program for my friends who were in the business program, I discovered that the university had a deal with the other university abroad that would exchange students from Japan to the US. I thought this was a great idea, and gave both the students and the university a huge advantage. For the students who participated they were able to get their MBA at an accelerated rate, as well as an experience to learn their degree in one of the best countries economically. It was beneficial for the University in the fact that they received some serious popularity in Japan, looking at some of the major donors of the university some of the top contributors were those who started in Japan and finished in the states. And with the amount of times they held fairs, talks, and seminars discussing the details of the program, you got the sense they wanted students to participate in the program.

Another example of how the university I attended was affected by multiculturalism was how much they promoted student diversity and identity. This was very attractive and something I appreciated as a student. In all foreign language classes students were required to create and participate in culture nights and fairs quite often in the semester. These nights and fairs consisted of which ever club or language holding activites that were relevant to that country and culture such as dancing, informational speakers, and always some type of food, which is the best way to draw in college students. They were open and encourage for all students to attend. The location where I attended school was heavily impacted by the Latino population, which is one of the groups I was able to connect with. The Latino nights consisted of learning the music and customs of the Latino culture as well as involving Latinos in the community by having student athletes become youth sport coaches as well as students who were bilingual and working with Latino youth in the area bring their students to campus to interact with the student life in someway. A girlfriend at the time of mine was a sport coach for a local youth team and here team would play against students as well as go through other activities with the college students. This was a great way for students at the college along with the local population interact with each other and learn more about the other side. I think this type of encouragement that the culture nights provided was huge for the locals to understand and see how approachable the academic students as well as the students understand what the local population culture is.

Commentary of responding to Multiculturalism

With study abroad and how much it seemed the university pushed students to study abroad one couldn't help but notice the underlying pursuit that the university had in sending students abroad. At the same time though I thought for students that were able to participate that it was a great way for them to get a leg up on their degree and profession and at the same time learn the ways of the economy and culture of another country, one that is doing quite well in the global economy.

As for the culture nights from a distance they did seem superficial and cheesy, if you participated you saw the positivity that was there. Not just with the youth that were able to have fun and see the support they have from the universities students, but while they were playing, by lingual students were working with mothers of the Latina culture to teach them about advantages education has as well as working with students who were studying social work on how they can advance themselves as well as their family in the society of the United States, a lot of stuff that just did not know about due to the cultural and language barrier. So in the end I thought the culture nights although looked cheesy were one of the more beneficial ways the university was adapting to Multiculturalism. By one interacting with the culture that existed outside the university as well as giving current university students who were of the culture a sense of pride and satisfaction that they were able to express their identity and culture in such a positive way.
