 If we take the results of some research on the division of roles and tasks in families (see for example Istat, 2012 Use of time and gender roles) the picture that emerges is unfortunately not encouraging.  The inequality in the distribution of domestic tasks is persistent: if at the end of the 1980s, 85 percent of family work was carried out by women, today the imbalance has decreased by only 10 percentage points and mainly in the northern regions of the country.  Italian women, therefore, continue to carry on their shoulders three quarters of the commitment of domestic and care activities (of children and the elderly), while men's time is mainly concentrated in professional activities.  And, even when fathers are more present and active in care work, their involvement is mainly associated with playful and recreational activities with the children rather than with care in the strict sense (preparation of meals and feeding the child, dressing, care in case of illnesses, baths, falling asleep, nocturnal awakenings), even routine activities that in most cases are carried out by women, stereotypically considered more suitable for physical assistance than the other.
 Looking at the parent-child relationship, important differences emerge according to the gender they belong to with respect to the involvement of boys / girls in domestic activities.  For example, from an early age, the contribution of daughters to family work is greater than that of boys (one hour and four minutes a day for girls, 22 minutes for boys).  The gap appears significant already during adolescence and grows with increasing age.  Already between the ages of 3 and 10, there are more girls than their male peers who carry out activities related to the preparation of meals (11.1 percent versus 5.4 percent) and, although to a lesser extent, the difference is it is also found in activities related to house cleaning and tidying (15.0 percent against 11.7 percent).]]> 2022-05-25 09:38:01 UTC https://padlet.com/noemiajosa/u3njb59ne1dh28ph/wish/2199138986 noemiajosa https://padlet.com/noemiajosa/u3njb59ne1dh28ph/wish/2199159741 Men and fathers are expected to be the providers of the family, while the mothers are expected to be more of the caretakers of the home and family.
