Goal 1. Rhetorical Awareness.

The artifact I have chosen for this Rhetorical Awareness is U1A3. This piece I chose talks about two pieces of Evidence of different points of things that happen between the borders. I have shown rhetorical evidence as I introduced the audience, reflected on the purpose, and got into the context of both pieces of evidence. An example in this piece of work was me diving into the context of both authors' stories. For example, “Border Boys Alberto Rios grew up in Nogales, Arizona and saw the border from the state side. Border South was filmed by Raul Paz Pastrama who was an immigrant from Mexico who is now a filmmaker in Denver, Colorado. These two points of view help us viewers see different pieces of what the Borderlands was about. Alberto wasn’t one to make a distraction or disadvantage into things worse but more as an opportunity to make things better and reflect on it. According from Border Boys ‘I grew up liking the border and its great scar/ Its drama is always good for a story the way scars always are,’ (16-17) Raul gave us the point of view of what it's’ like on the other side of wall, the reason for trying to cross and the hardships you have to overcome. It’s good to have both points of perspective, from a person who sees people trying to cross and a person who is trying to cross” (Jack Henderson 2- 28) The way rhetorical awareness has and will help me in the future in my writings is getting to get a lot of background information told and setting the plot for the rest of my writings.

Goal 2: Critical Thinking

The piece of evidence that really reflects my critical thinking I felt was D6. In D6 I reflected on how the I-10 freeway that got constructed affected and even destroyed Barrios and immigrants' land. In this reflection I used Critical thinking, used supported arguments, and by trying to put myself in these peoples shoes who were being affected by this freeway. I had to think about if this was me, what would I do, what was the main thesis Lydia was trying to get across, and think hard about what the pictures meant and affected the people of that time. An example I used of digging deep into text was “ When reading about what the I-10 freeway did to the barrios it had a lot more to do with just traffic, noise, explosions, and more. It brought business that came right along the highway that destroyed many of Barrios. Luckily their home wasn't touched but with that coming a big building came along that brought even more distress. Big building with a bright green sign right down the street of their home, sure it brought them jobs, but they didn't pay much, only $1 an hour. I feel like after reading this portion of the text what It did to this family was lose their sense of community and feeling of home. Seeing many barrios get destroyed is so sad to see and I couldn't Imagine.” (Jack Henderson 3-20) For my future writings, Critical Thinking means more than using evidence to support a claim but really putting in your two senses and thinking in another person's shoes, how you would feel, what you would, and even possible solutions to a conflict. This would make many of my writings in the future better.

Goal 3: Conventions

The piece of work I used for the Goal Convention was U2A3. This assignment that I did was background and reflection for a project that I did. The project is embedded in the writing. The way I showed Genre Convention was by having a structure, style, design, and even citations. My Genre was a Fotonovela where I had the same flow per slide, had my own taste and style in each slide and picture. As well as including Mla Citations per picture of fact throughout my Fotonovela. I would say I followed must conventions for the genre of a fotonovela but I could have done a better job making it look more of a comic as that's generally what a fotonovela looks like. An example of me using general conventions of a fotonovela is this Convention screenshot. I used Mla citation, included original photos, and also used senses such as smell. The way I can use Conventions in the future is following a Genre Guideline or even base to make my work look like similar work.

The artifact I chose was U1A4 as It shows my revision plan and how revised some of my peers work. The reason its location is in Nogales is because that's where the essay has one of its settings. I reflected on my peers' essay and the way I went about it was I started on the basics and looked over spelling, punctuation, and wording. From there I went on to Rhetorical Awareness and ways he used examples and outside sources throughout the essay. I mentioned the things he did well on and things he needed improvement on such as missing examples and explaining how a rhetorical device was being used in his sources. Bryson and my professor reviewed mine as I was missing outside sources, Mla formatting, and even examples from text. I went on to fix those. An example of me revising a piece of Bryson work was using constructive criticism, “Paragraph 4- This paragraph is very short and isn't very good. You tell us what rhetorical strategies are shown in all of your sources, but you give no examples for any and just tell us what pathos is. I'd give examples and make this paragraph much longer as these strategies are important. This would make your essay that much better!” (Jack Henderson 2-14) Revision will absolutely help me in future as I really like a peer writing about the same thing about bouncing their ideas and feedback to make it better and I can do the same for them.

Goal 5: Reflecting

My artifact I have chosen that I feel shows me Reflecting is D5. In D5 I compare writing to a field trip we went to that was called “Tucson’s Birthplace.” I compare and contrast things in her writing that I actually got to see and experience. Later on in my discussion I also got to use a personal experience and think ahead of how this can represent the future and past things migrants will and have had to deal with. An example of me showing a reflection process throughout my discussion: “Some-places I want to visit that can further help my understanding of borderlands are. Tanque Verde falls as a hiking trail that shows deep water falls in rigid areas to walk and climb. When there I can think about how immigrants were traveling in such bad conditions and paths especially during monsoon season. Another one is Nogales just to see the wall and what it resembles and looks like.” (Jack Henderson 2-20) Reflecting will help me in my future writings when going somewhere and having to show and even explain details that can resemble other pieces in a writing class.

Goal 6: Sense of belonging

The piece of work I used was D1. D1 is an intro to who I am, where I'm from, and who did the land belong to way before my time. This piece of work gets me feeling a sense of belonging as I am from Denair, California and that is the place I am talking about. I reflect on who the land belonged to before justice intersected and my answer is the people who mostly live there still today, Cowboys, Native American Indians, and even Farmers. Where I live now today nothing has changed besides people owning and having certain pieces of their own land. Believe it or not it looks the same as it did back in the day just with more mature landscaping. My lifestyle consists of Farms, Diaries, Orchards, Cows, Pigs, and even goats is my sense of belonging. I can use my sense of belonging in future writings to show my hard-working background and what I had to do to get to the place I wanted too.

Testimonio

Jack Henderson

English 102

Melani Matinez

April 26, 2023

Jack’s Testimonio

Throughout this school year I was really trying to make every single class and get through every assignment as best possible. Early in the first semester I received a group facetime while I was walking to Mckale for basketball practice. The call was from my Mother and Father. Right away I knew something was up and it wasn’t something I wanted to hear. When I heard the words "Son we have something to tell you,” (Angela Henderson) my heart skipped a few beats. The next words that came out of their mouths I had a lot of mixed emotions, these words were “Jack your dad has accepted a job offer in Dallas and we are moving there in a month or so.” (Mom.) I was very upset because they were selling our childhood home and all the great memories I had there like 4th of July parties with my friends and family too opening Christmas presents with my happy Grandparents and Cousins. The other side of me was stoked for my Dad but then thinking about them moving across the country really just hurt me as we have no family over there. This weight on my shoulder and the feeling of being frustrated and upset took a toll on my academics. I would be finding myself looking at pictures and even videos of holidays with my large family. I would procrastinate homework and lose motivation as I think about how I will never walk into that home again. During the time my family was packing to move I would facetime my siblings to comfort them about how this new start is just a part of the journey and how they will meet new friends and be in a nice neighborhood to play in. While saying these things I wanted to believe these things I was saying but we had it good in Denair, California. Small town with almond orchards, one stop light, and one big neighborhood that everyone knew each other. This affected my education as I was 13 hours away from my hometown. I would often be stressed out about this situation. I would find myself skipping classes and half Assing homework assignments to go on trips with my friends and decompress by going to places I enjoy like a golf Tournament and parties. During spring break, I went home but it was a place I had never been before. As much as I was looking forward to seeing my friends and family back home, I went to my family's new home. I saw a lot of joy in my parents' faces and my siblings were surprisingly loving their new school and neighborhood. I thought to myself, “I’m in college and have started my new journey and I'm loving it. If they love their new journey that’s all that matters” (myself.) Seeing their new home and how they are doing brought a lot of weight on my shoulders. I am now a young adult that can visit my hometown and family where I still feel belonged even without living there anymore. After spring break, I was able to look straight forward and really make a change towards my academics. This is my story and how I overcame how belonging affected my academics.
