Community Service Initiative module (CSI) is a compulsory MPU4 subject, in which students are required to pass in order to graduate. In School of Architecture, Building and Design, CSI will continue the traditional teaching and learning method in Architectures, that is learning by integrating theories with design practice. we are required to incorporate the theory we have learned at school into real life environment and problems. The intention is to reveal us to the real community and work together as a team for architectural, culture and environmental enhancing activities in the communities of different social economic status and social groups. We can choose one from the four different series of community services which are Charitable Homes or Organization (CH), Community Centre (CC), Street Community (SS) and Environment Enhancing, E2 Project (E2). For my team, in a group of 7 members we are agreed to choose the category of Community Centre. We decided to pick one of the centre called PKKHS which was suggested by one of my groupmate, Jiyann. We all hope that we can help them to enhance their living quality and wanted to have the chance to inspired the teenagers in PKKHS and give them motivations in life because actually PKKHS is a rehabilitation centre for rebellious teenagers.

Before we going to site visit to the PKKHS centre, we have do some research about the place in there and we have few ideas for example using the recycle wood pallet to built some furniture for example table and chair or use the recycle pallet to make some book rack or storage. But after we going to site visit to the PKKHS, the idea and the proposal for using recycle wood pallet that we presented to the thacher in PKKHS are be rejected because the environment over there is moist and not suitable for putting recycle wood pallet in that space. Throughout the design process we did face some problems in term of some disagreement between us and the representative of PKKHS. But after that we come out with an idea that using the recycle tyre to do some furnitures for example chairs and we plan to put the some chair in the corner of the study space to make the space more comfortable and embellish the space. So when the teenagers feel stress after study they can go to the space chill and relax theirself. After that we presented this idea and proposal to the teacher, she approved our proposal and we start to work it out. Beside that we also propose to make the mosquito net to put in their bedroom so that they will be more comfortable during sleep. It is meaningful that we can help people by our own hand and solve their problems creatively. This is totally a new experience and new way for me to contribute to the society.

We use the recycle tyre to do the chair, first we wash the tyre and put under the sun to wait it to dry and after that we paint the tyre with two different colour of paint and after that we put the round wood plank on the tyre so that we can sit on it. Another things that we do is the table. We drill that wood plank on the pail and paint it with the same colour with the chair. During doing the chair and the table. I feel very satisfaction after doing these furniture , actually the most interesting part of this project is we were able to design things that help people in need. Throughout the process that we do the furniture we did face some problems in term of materiality, costs and the method that how we do the furniture but after that we did solve it. After we furniture in the following week we bring some recycle bottle and paint to PKKHS and start do some stationery holder with them, they can design their own stationery holder, some of them draw what they like on on it, some of them write quote and some of them paint it with the colour that they like. During this activity, we try to communicate and interact with the teenagers and we feel that we know more about them after the activity. In the process of this project, I learned many things that cannot be found in books it was all about experiences. For example, the ability to solve problems. In every process of making diy furniture and the diy pencil holder we will get few minor problems and as a group we try to help each other to finish our work efficiently.

Last but not least, what i have learn from this project is that as a young architect, we can help other who need help in architectural way to improve others life and we can motivate and inspire others by helping them. For this project we have used the unwanted tyre, recycle pail and recycle bottle to do the diy furniture and diy stationery holder to reduce the waste and repurposed it into another useful things. After doing this project i feel very satisfaction and especially after doing the diy furniture, i realised that helping people is not just donated money to them, we can do something to make their life better and we can do something together with them to make their life better and communicate with them and know more about what they need, how they think and motivate them and they also gave me motivations and inspirations on what I am going to do in my life.

Taking this Community Service Initiative module, we formed a group of 8 and chose Persatuan Kebajikan Komunity Harapan Selangor, a non-profit, non- government organization as our beneficiary. The site that we chose was their teenage rehabilitation center, which was set up to rehabilitate teenage boys who face disciplinary issues, and aid them in turning over a new leaf towards the right track.

Before visiting the site, our proposal in mind was a playscape constructed out of pallets to create a space that is conducive for reading and yet able to stimulate the teenage boys minds with its expressive form. However, this proposal was cut short after we conducted our first site visit to the center. We learnt, from the person in charge, that the area was prone to termites, and previously they spent a huge sum of money to resolve the termite issue. This proved to be a challenge for us throughout this project as we were not allowed to create anything with wooden materials anymore.

During our first site visit, we observed that the area was kept very clean and pleasant in hygienic sense, which showed the organization's efforts in making sure the boy's health and hygiene were not compromised. However, the person in charge told us that the area was a dengue red zone, and there was absence of mosquito nets to prevent that. One of the boys also told us that it was hard to sleep at night due to disturbance from mosquitoes. We also noticed that at the basement of the building, which was where the boys spent most of their day studying, looked dull and mundane as it was all bare white walls and concrete floors.

Based on our observations and conversation with people there, we proposed a seating area comprising of reused tyre chairs and reused paint buckets, as well as stationary holders which we also engaged the boy's involvement in completion. We also could not leave out the mosquito nets which were essential to the boy's well being.

It proved to be a great challenge to complete our proposed design with our hectic schedule, but we enjoyed every moment of it as we knew we were doing something meaningful and contributing to society. The excited faces we see from the boys whenever we turn up to the center with something new in our hands gave us so much motivation to work harder to provide them with something that can brighten up their days.

This project has inspired me deeply within as it made me come to a realization that architecture does have an impact on society, and I was saddened by the experience knowing that there are less fortunate people living out there, without anyone bothering to help. Architects have to capability to create spaces that are functional, stimulating and sheltering to the users whilst raising awareness on the possibilities of old material reuse. It is all up to our intentions and capabilities to determine what spaces will be created for the benefit of the less fortunate, and I am grateful that I have that opportunity to use my skill as a future architect to serve the society and make their world just a little brighter.
