The United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, a series of 17 global goals aiming at tackling major social, economic, and environmental concerns. These objectives include the abolition of poverty and hunger, the provision of excellent education and healthcare, the promotion of gender equality, the development of sustainable cities and communities, and the combatting of climate change. The SDGs establish a comprehensive framework for international collaboration and policy actions aimed at achieving a more equal, inclusive, and ecologically sustainable society by 2030. They serve as a template for governments, corporations, and communities throughout the world to work together to create a more equitable and sustainable society.

The concepts of social justice, fairness, and environmental stewardship are shared by Islam and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Islamic beliefs place a premium on poverty reduction, education, healthcare, and gender equality, all of which connect with several SDGs. Zakat, an Islamic form of almsgiving, reflects the SDG aim of alleviating poverty. Principles of Islamic finance encourage prudent investment and economic progress. Environmental conservation is consistent with the Islamic notion of Earth stewardship (khilafah). Many Muslim-majority nations are actively trying to achieve the SDGs, demonstrating the congruence of Islamic ideals with the global quest of sustainability. Integrating Islamic ethics can make a big contribution to accomplishing the SDGs and creating a more fair society.

The term Maqasid Al-Syariah refers to the higher goals or aims of Islamic law (Sharia), which are intended to promote human well-being and protect justice. Maqasid principles connect with various Sustainable progress Goals (SDGs), providing a comprehensive framework for social progress. For example, in Maqasid, the pursuit of justice, equality, and poverty reduction aligns to the SDGs of no poverty, zero hunger, and social justice. Maqasid's emphasis on education and knowledge is consistent with the SDGs' emphasis on excellent education. Similarly, in Maqasid, environmental stewardship promotes SDGs relating to climate action and life on land and below water. Including Maqasid Al-Syariah in the curriculum can give an Islamic ethical underpinning for accomplishing the SDGs.

The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) confronts obstacles such as insufficient finance, political opposition, and little global cooperation. Developing countries may confront resource limits and economic restraints, stifling growth. Political insecurity and competing objectives stymie SDG incorporation into national agendas. Inadequate data and monitoring procedures make effective assessment and reporting difficult. Policies that are inconsistent, institutions that are weak, and a lack of knowledge are all hurdles. To achieve environmental sustainability, it is necessary to overcome opposition to change and confront the intricacies of global concerns. To overcome the multiple hurdles limiting the full implementation of the SDGs, bridging these gaps requires concerted efforts, collaboration, and new solutions.

SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) rely heavily on institutions. SDG 16 requires competent institutions to guarantee the rule of law, promote inclusive decision-making, and combat corruption. They improve access to justice, human rights protection, and transparent governance. SDG 17 emphasises the importance of cooperation, and institutions play an important role in facilitating collaborations between governments, corporations, and civil society. Strong institutions improve openness, accountability, and collaboration, laying the groundwork for accomplishing sustainable development objectives and creating resilient, inclusive communities across the world.

Measurement, indices and indicators are critical instruments for measuring Sustainable Development progress. Indicators are used to measure progress in global projects such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Examples include the Human Development Index (HDI), which measures happiness, the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which measures environmental health, and the Gender Development Index (GDI), which measures gender equality. Indicators cover economic, social, and environmental factors, allowing for a holistic assessment of sustainability. Robust measuring systems allow politicians to make informed decisions, creating accountability and driving global efforts towards a balanced and sustainable future.
