She does this until one day when something goes wrong on one of the group's missions to the Cyganiera Cafe, and everyone in the group gets killed except for Chaya and a new recruit, Esther. Chaya does not like Esther because she thinks she is weak, but as they both journey together to the Lodz and Warsaw ghetto, they find out a lot more about each other and they learn to love each other like sisters. When they both reach the Warsaw ghetto to help the people there in the Warsaw Uprising, they fight until they need to leave to stay safe. They leave through the sewers with Esther leading them until they all hear an officer approach. Esther does not want everyone to be caught, so she sacrifices her life for everyone else by letting the officer lead her away and eventually shoot her.
