The Working Class

These people included factory workers, miners, immigrants and laborers. Most of them lived in poverty during the industrial revolution, they were underpaid and often overworked. These people lived in places like New York and Chigaco from the mid 1800s to early 1900s. This was caused by a quick industrial growth and this created a need for cheap labor. They worked to make labor unions which wanted shorter days. better pay and safer workign enviorment.

The New Consumer Culture

The middle class, especially women became consumers of mass produced goods. In the late 1800s -1900s in urban areas, people shifted from making their own goods to buying mass produced products. New factories could produce goods faster and cheaper.

Panic of 1873

A major economic depression caused by the collapse of big banks and railroad companies that effected banks, railroad companies, workers and farmers. It started in 1873 in New York but spread across. The over investments in railroads caused the crash and millions of jobs were lost and wages dropped.

Scientific Management

Fredric Winslow Taylor was an engineer who developed this system. It was a method of making things more efficient by breaking the work into smaller steps. It was used in factories all over the US starting in the early 1900s. It increased productivity and profits.

Knights of Labor

One of the first major Labor unions in the US founded by Uriah Stephens in 1869 in Philidephia but it was active across the US. They fought for better pay, shorter hours and safer working conditions. They used peaceful protests and strikes to try to get these things.

American Federation of Labor

A major union for skilled workers founded by Samuel Gompers in 1886 in New York. It was formed after the fall of the Knights of Labor, and it used strikes and negotiation to get better improvements.
