England's economy was bad, so the king charted the virginia company to colonize north america in search of gold. But there was little gold, then John Rolfe arrived at the Jamestown colony and brought tobacco seeds to plant. The colony gets rich growing tobacco and indentured servants are brought over. Indentured servants have downsides, so people turn to slavery. A major turning point was Bacon's rebellion, which prompted people to move away from indentured servitude. Indentured servants were paid land, which was scarce since the land west of the colonies were occupied by native Americans. Landowners did not want to give up their land, so they moved into slavery.

They had to sign a contract that lasted 4-7 years—and worked in harsh conditions/climates. Afterward, they were rewarded freedom dues when they finished their contract.

Tobacco was discovered by John Rolfe. It was very important because it was the reason Jamestown flourished under the settlers. It was a major cash crop and gave the English power over the colonies. It also influenced slavery for years in the U.S. and ended indentured servitude.

I also remember Harrison and Hakluyt and how they dealt with overpopulation in England (giving money/sending the people away). I also remember learning about slavery and indentured servitude. I also remember learning about acknowledgment statements and King Henry's 8 wives, Martin Luther, Calvinism, and the Catholic/Christian church development over the years.

I remember Hakluyt and Harrison's plans, Harrison's being to give the poor money, and Hakluyt being to send them to America. John Rolfe married Pocohontas and created Tobacco. A bunch of people died in Jamestown because they were busy looking for gold.

Jamestown: I remember learning about the original settlers of Jamestown and how the colony struggled to survive before the discovery of tobacco. Originally settlers were being led by John Smith who helped the colony barely survive through its first hard winter. Later the colony began to thrive when John Rolph brought the first tobacco seed and began a new source for money.

I remember Harrison and hakluyt. the Mass laws and the puritans and the separatists. The formation of Rhode Island and the indentured servants vs. slaves. I remember the Pocahontas and John white and John Rofle. John Rofle brought tobacco to the US and started planting it which brought lots of money to the struggling colony.

I also remember the Harrison and Hakluyt essay about their two perspectives on how to fix the amount of poor in England. I remember learning about how Rhode Island was founded and by whom. We learned about many people like John Rolfe, Martin Luther, King Henry and his wives, Pocahontas, and the Powhatan tribe. I learned a lot about tobacco and how it affected the economy.

Tobacco was a major factor in the development of Jamestown, and the English colonies as a whole. Tobacco was brought to America by John Rolfe, who later married Pocahontas. Tobacco, very popular in Europe at the time, became the main cash crop in the colonies for around 150 years. Tobacco also introduced the need for more labor, resulting in the need for indentured servants and slaves, with the first slave ship arriving in 1619. Indentured servitude, however, was slowly being replaced by racial slavery. This was because wealthy landowners did not was to pay freedom dues, and eventually, Bacon's Rebellion led the rich to completely abandon indentured servitude.

I remember the details of England's economy at the time they came up with the idea of colonizing the new world (poor economy, needed more profit, freedom of religion, and competition with other countries. As well as Hakluyt and Harrison's separate solutions to solve poverty.) I remember most of the history of religion in England and the difference between Puritans and separatists (the two groups that migrated to the new world to establish a new life). I remember the different types of government established in the New World, like the Mayflower Compact and direct vs representative government—lastly, the New World's attempt to solve cheap labor through indentured servants and slaves.
