The 3 Minute Speech: What was your topic? What worked well? What were the challenges? What would you do differently next time?

The topic in my 3 minute speech was about how technology is going to destroy people’s careers. The thing that worked well was my research and logos and my ability to make a link between different concepts. The challenges were finding information because this speech was very information based and a lot of research had to be done. Lastly, I would make my speech more engaging next time because there was more research than emotional appeal and I feel that it should have a correct balance but my speech did not.

The Research Journal: Why do we research? Why keep a journal? How useful was the journal?

Research is important in speeches because we need reliable and verified information in our speeches to better reinforce our points to the audience. By using in text citations in the speech, “according to…”, can also help because the audience would see that the information that the speaker is talking about is legitimate and not made up. Furthermore, keeping a research journal is helpful because it is an organised to record the sources used in the research ad it is an effective to store and refer to information needed in the speech.

My topic for the long speech was about how passions is constricted in society. In this speech, unlike the other, the emotional appeal worked very well. According to Mr Rhys, I fed everyone through the palm of my hand, which means that by effectively varying my tone, I was able to influence the audience to show different emotions at different parts of the speech. The challenges in this , was to include research and personal experiences in this speech and this was difficult because these were two different evidences and it was hard to connect them together. Next time, to improve, I could include more research in my speech so as to better reinforce my points.
