In 1921, Prime Minister Hara Takashi was killed. The Japanese began to support leaders that conquest could restore the nation's fortunes. In 1931, Japan attacked Manchuria. The League of Nations did nothing and Japan kept advancing into China. In 1941, General Tojo Hideki was named minister of war. Then he became Prime Minister. He was very ambitious and wanted Japan to be an empire. He wanted to go west.

Italy

After WW1, Italy had a big economy crisis. They had lost many soldiers and the government was weak. Then Mussolini came around with Facism. Facism was being very popular at the time. By 1925, the weak king gave Mussolini the power to create a government. By 1935, Mussolini wanted an empire and tried to invade Ethiopia. Ethiopia asked for help from the league of nations but they didn't get help. Italy conquered Ethioipia.

Germany

The treaty of V. treated Germany very badly. They had to pay a lot of money and lost a lot of land. Hitler wanted to change that. He gave people the idea that they could bring Germany back to glory. They blamed all their problems on Jews.

Spain

Facism gained popularity in Spain too. Franco and other people wanted to control the government and they created the spanish civil-war that lasted 3 years. Hitler and Mussolini helped Franco while the soviets helped the republicans. Franco won and took control of the government.

Fascists Unite

Mussolini and Hitler shared common ideas. They also liked Japan because they both felt that the Soviet Union was a common enemy. They signed a pact in 1936. Germany and Italy became known as the axis powers. They signed another pact in 1940 strengthening the 3 countries connections.

The rhineland is the western part of germany that borders france. The treaty of V. says that no military is allowed to be there. In 1936 hitler sent his army to the rhineland.

Austria's Invasion

Europeans were tired of the war. They had their own problems. So they didn't do anything about Hitler and Mussolini. In 1938, Hitler claimed that austria was part of germany. Hitler put pressure on the austrian leader and he gave up. Germany took control of austria and set up an "Independent Government" but really germany controlled it.

Hitler said that most people in czech. were ethnic germans. He wanted the land but england didn't want war so they let him take it. Then hitler wanted more so hitler, mussoliini, chamberlain, and daladier met up and talked about. They were scared of war so they allowed Hitler to claim it.

The UK and France were very tired of WW1. They had their own economic problems. They had something called appeasement which meant they gave in to stuff to avoid war. They didn't think Hitler and Mussolini would go so far.
