An ad hominem argument is one that attacks the ethos of the speaker--usually with an insult or criticism that is irrelevant to their claim. Take this example--Samsung pokes at Apple by saying that people don't have to wait outside in the rain for days to get a Galaxy 4. It's ad hominem because it doesn't say anything about the merits of the Galaxy 4, just that you won't freeze to death trying to buy it.
