Some librarians operate on a fixed schedule while others are spread throughout multiple schools within their district. This can create a barrier to collaboration because time is at a premium for everyone. If the librarian is not a daily presence on campus, classroom teachers may feel it is an inconvenience to co-plan with that person.

Collaboration should start at the beginning. A co-planning tool should be used. Shareable tech also can be used to respect time limitations. This start to finish collaboration builds trust between educators as everyone is on the same page going into the lesson and potential disappointment can be preempted.

School librarians are in the unique position to work with students and faculty in all content areas in a way that most other educators are not. Because of this, the LMS may see opportunities for collaboration that may have otherwise been overlooked. Maybe a PBL experience that requires math skills and artistic expression can bring together math and art teachers in an unconventional way? When the library is viewed as the hub of the school, these connections are more likely.

Anyone who has ever worked in a school knows that the work environment can make or break new teachers and determine how successful and engaged students become. Good leaderships involves making school a place where students AND teachers want to be every day. Professional relationships, trust and opportunities for staff to learn and grow together are one way to make this possible. Students, parents, administrators and educators should want their school to feel like a community.

Trust between educators can be hard to come by. No one likes to give up control when the stakes are so high. There are many reasons that trust could be lacking. It may come from the climate in the school- maybe leadership has failed to promote an environment that fosters partnerships and instead pits educators against one another for praise and opportunity. It is also possible that classroom teachers and administrators don't see librarians as teachers, but rather treat them as support staff. Another reason for lack of trust could be the lack of consistency and deprofessionalization of school librarians. Teachers may come from schools where the library is run by paraprofessionals or there isn't a library program at all. It takes time and effort to build up a rapport and trust among professionals.

Some school environments are not supportive of collaborative efforts among educators. There may not be common planning time or support for developing the relationships needed to foster true collaboration. This support needs to come from building and district leadership.

Many classroom teachers are unfamiliar with the skills and qualifications of school librarians. Sometimes teachers are interested in using the library space and resources but do not understand that librarians are most appropriately utilized as instructional partners. Information literacy skills are best taught at the point of need, within existing curriculum by information experts.

Librarians cannot sit at their desks and wait for others to approach them with collaborative projects. Librarians should understand the curriculum and attend department and grade level meetings so they are able to look for opportunities to work with teachers and students. At the end of the collaboration, it is important to SHARE the exciting work students have completed with admins, parents and anyone who will listen!
