The most compelling information that I internalized from these resources was how self-care is an inherently ethical, irreplaceable component of successfully working in a helping career. Far too often, I have seen overworking oneself to the point of burnout being normalized and even moralized; these resources are a sobering reminder of the damage that perspective can inflict.

To be a successful helping professional, it is necessary to act with sound judgement, awareness, and empathy--qualities that are all negatively impacted by burnout.

One of the most helpful self-care techniques I have found for myself is spending unstructured time in nature, especially when I am able to share this experience with people I love. My personal self-care strategy will be to schedule at least one weekly outing to a beautiful outdoor location with my loved ones. During this time, my only objective will be mindful connection with the natural world and those around me.
