Creative Interaction Designer: My contribution to the project

In order to design creative, interactive media for Light Up the Night, I need to generate visual ideas in the form of a moodboard, which is a good starting point for originality and concept development. Before searching for imagery and placing it into a moodboard, I will look at the definitions of homelessness, and consider how those definitions might tie in with the brief handed down to me from my team for a “mid winter lantern festival”. My aim will be to respect the sensitivity of homelessness while creating a mood of warmth and community involvement. That is the design challenge of Light Up the Night.

There are various definitions of homelessness available, from Homelessness Australia, Shelter WA, Mission Australia, The Salvation Army, etc. I have chosen to refer to the “cause of homelessness” presented by Mission Australia as a starting point for homelessness key terms:

“Homelessness can be the result of many social, economic and health-related factors. From our experience, people can become homeless after many years of experiencing poverty, poor relationships and drug, alcohol or mental health issues.” https://www.missionaustralia.com.au

With this in mind, my design concepts for Light Up the Night will avoid use of images of party-goers, large crowds, excessive gourmet foods, alcohol, fancy camping equipment, etc. My concepts will remain culturally and socially sensitive to the cause and be driven by imagery of warmth, light, acceptance, human connection, rest, harmony, comfort and home.

My practical contribution to the project will be the delivery of:

Create and adhere to Digital Style Guide.

Website for the event.

Mobile app to check in, connect to social media, donate to the cause.

Data visualisations of homelessness statistics for use across project.

Interactive email campaign.

All of the above would be presented to my team for their approval.
//Naomi

Medibank presents a great example of a vibrant, engaging Digital Style Guide.

The Digital Style Guide for Light Up the Night is a set of basic rules that keep the brand of the event on track. For Light Up the Night to have an effective, engaging campaign and therefore attract event attendees and raise awareness and donations, the digital presence of the event must be consistent. It must also be sensitive to the concept and statistics of homelessness.

The Digital Style Guide could serve as a “living” document initially, developed for the inaugural Light Up the Night, allowing it to be tested on the market and measured for engagement, such as unique website visitors and app downloads. In subsequent years the Digital Style Guide would become a formal document, adhered to by all Digital Communications staff, from Social Media Strategist to UX/UI Designer.

The Digital Style Guide will provide:

Rules for the correct digital use of logo, fonts, colours.

Rules for responsive website layouts that respond to desktop, laptop and mobile screens.

Provide a library of website headers, banners, icons, avatars, favicons, textures, and photography in a range of file formats including JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF.

Provide code snippets for HTML/CSS.

Provide Tableau templates for data visualisation.

The Digital Style Guide will be developed in collaboration with upper management and be aligned to any other Style Guides that the project adheres to.
//Naomi

Website design for a cause-based project like Light Up the Night need not be a large expense. In the past, organisations relied upon the combined expertise of website developers and graphic designers to create professional, functional websites, often outsourcing at high hourly rates. Coding skills were required and if the website server went offline, it was not always a quick fix, damaging brand reputation.

Now there are a range of open-source, free or low cost, professional and secure website creation platforms that adequately meet the needs of almost any organisation. Wordpress, Wix, Weebly. They all offer all-in-one websites but Squarespace appears to be the most trusted even among brands like Nike. The power of these platforms cannot be underestimated. They have secure servers and effective ad-blocking code built-in, so you don’t see your “free” website littered with spam ads the way they were in the past.

As Creative Interaction Designer I would steer toward using Squarespace for the Light Up the Night website, opting for a custom template which would only set the project back around $50. My skillset as a Creative Interaction Designer would fulfil the requirements for populating and maintaining the website content, cancelling out any need to outsource.

Squarespace is a responsive website framework. That means the website changes shape and feel when it’s viewed on a PC, laptop or phone… or when you click and drag the corner of the window. This is non-negotiable in today’s internet media where “mobile usage has never been higher” (Yump.com)

I will look to Yump for inspiration for UX Design, given the awards Yump boast, the quality of their own website, and the fact they are cause-based like our project. Other award winning websites can be seen on at Awwwards.
//Naomi

Curation of an Art Exhibition featuring work from people who have experienced, or are experiencing homelessness.

One of the best ways to raise awareness of issues surrounding poverty and homelessness is to make available to the public, a visual representation of the feelings, thoughts and issues that people who know firsthand what is is to be homeless have and are facing. In order to do this, I will curate an exhibition, from concept to the main event to bring this Art to the people at the Mid Winter Lantern Parade.

In order to do this, I would approach a local charity or social work service and engage them to encourage some personalities that they know in these situations to come and contribute something for the exhibition.
The homeless people could go to the local charity eg. Salvation Army, to come in to a work space, or a local Community Hall to work on certain days on their Art. While they are there they can receive hot food, tea, coffee and get warm for a little while. A Social Worker or Counsellor could attend and listen or give advice if the need arises.

In order to make sure there is enough time to complete work this project could be started well before "Light Up The Night".

One Week before the event the completed Art Work would be collected and framed or made ready for display. A marquee would be erected on the morning on the event and I would come to the marquee to display.

All patrons of the event would be encouraged to come into the marquee with a gold coin donation for homeless charities. The Art can be sold with proceeds to be given to the creators of the Art.

In order to promote the exhibition appropriate details would be forwarded to Naomi Gunton to add to her web page and social media networks. She can then promote the exhibition within the event.

The app uses geo-coding to pin your lantern release at your location, give it a place stamp, and send it off. Paypal could also be connected so you could send a donation with your release. Lanterns could have a running total of money raised. Take a look at the example, on your phone and desktop, with the sound up.
