Bilingual teachers in Chilean public Schools

Our audience as bilingual teachers is the Chilean public schools, since it is the major percentage in Chile where students are educated and, therefore, where peers are directly involved in the teaching and development of literacy among multilingual learners. Acquiring these skills is such an important tool for future development, since it is the base for every person to have an effective reading and comprehension. That is why we as teachers give a special focus on this skill since everyone has the opportunity to receive an appropriate learning experience of literacy. Many teachers face every day the challenge of meeting diverse reading levels in classrooms where English is taught as a second language. This is not an easy task but is highly necessary nowadays. That is why our project offers clear and practical examples of balanced literacy practices of Scarborough’s Rope and at same time, supports differentiated reading. By modeling Read Aloud, Shared Reading, and Guided Reading this work will equip teachers with tools that promote inclusion, academic achievement, and socio-emotional learning in multilingual classrooms.

Author: Chris Arvetis and Carole palmer

Grade: First grade

Class: Science

Learning Standard:

OA_11: Describe and record the daily cycle and the differences between day and night, based on the observation of the Sun, the Moon, the stars, the brightness of the sky, among others, and their effects on living beings and the environment.

About the book:

The book is about a group of animals that are questioning about day and night. In the book the owl takes the role of connoisseur and explains the scientific reason behind why we experience daytime and nighttime on Earth. The book uses simple language and illustrations to show that the Earth rotates, and explains that when one side of the Earth faces the Sun, it is day; when it turns away from the Sun, it becomes night. The story helps young readers understand this concept through easy explanations. The book is very colorful which makes it eye-catching for children and the characters are animals, which help to call the attention of students too.

This book is appropriate to read in science because it can be very helpful to teach difficult ideas (daytime and nighttime, rotation of the sun, etc) in simple words, which makes it interesting for students of first grade because they are learning about this in the unit 4 that year.
