This book follows Maisy Mouse as she goes to preschool. She meets with her friends and engages in various activities throughout the day. Maisy's teacher reads to the class, the kids play outside, they paint, and take naps.
This is a nice book to have in an early elementary class as students are still getting used to the school setting. It promotes a very positive image of schooling as well.

This book is about a caterpillar that hatches from an egg and is extremely hungry as the title describes. He eats many fruits and vegetables as well as junk food that makes him sick. At the very end, he makes a cocoon and rests before becoming a butterfly!
I have always enjoyed books by Eric Carle as well as the illustrations. This book does not seem to have a particularly profound message in it. It is a nice and somewhat silly books to read with young children.

George wants to get involved and begins picking up all paper he finds, including his neighbor's newspapers and someone's important files. People coming looking for their items and end up staying at the event to help plant trees.
This book teaches the importance of keeping the environment safe and clean.

In this book, Brother Bear gets into trouble for falling behind in his homework. His parents tell him to catch up but he finds it to be too tough. After visiting his grandparents, Brother Bear finds out that Papa Bear was the same way in his school days and only wants Brother Bear to do better. Upon returning home, Brother Bear finds that Papa Bear had fallen behind in his own work and the two sit together to complete their work.
I like this book because it shows children that adults can make mistakes too or fall behind in work. It lets kids know it's okay to need help or make mistakes.

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

A young boy goes to look for the Once-ler and find out what happened to trees. The Once-ler recounts the story of how due to his greed and business in spite of the Lorax, he chopped down all of the Truffula trees and polluted the area so badly that all creatures living there had to leave. He ultimately tells the boy "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not." He hands the boy the last remaining seed of the Truffula trees and encourages him to plant it.
This is another book that would be really good for a lesson on sustainability and teaching students about pollution. The silly language and rhymes also keep students engaged.

A young boy learns about dragons and their love of tacos. He decides to host a taco party for some dragons. One thing that is noted is that dragons do not like spicy salsa. The boy accidentally buys spicy salsa and feeds it to the dragons. The dragons then breathe fire and end up destroying the boy's home. They help him rebuild his home and are repaid with spice free tacos.
This is quite a silly book that could be fun to read to young children. They could get a good laugh from it. It seems like a fun book to read during a free period of time in class to get the students to relax and unwind.

This book follows the story of a middle school boy named Jerome that is shot and killed by a police officer while playing outside one day. He becomes a ghost and invisible to everyone except the daughter of the police officer that killed him, Sarah. Sarah tries to seek justice for Jerome and Jerome struggles to come to terms with his death. With the help of other ghost boys, the two eventually achieve what they are looking for.
I think this book would be suitable for upper elementary students. There are sections I feel could be too dark or graphic for younger students. Some concepts may be too difficult for them to understand as well.

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

This novel is an autobiography in poetry form. Jacqueline Woodson describes her life through poetry. She discusses the deaths, births, failures and successes that occur in her family. The poetic form of this novel really helps convey emotions she and her family feel as well ass place emphasis on certain names or places. This book does not have many mature or adult themes. I think because of Woodson’s vocabulary, this could be a better fit for an older student in 5th grade or so. The length can also be intimidating for younger students although I would not discourage them from trying to read this book if they wanted to.
