This quote introduces a recurring theme of Kathy seeing some kind of boundary or "line" on the horizon. This represents how Kathy is trapped by her environment, but she doesn't even realize it -- she doesn't realize what freedom is or how to achieve it. The book will end with a kind of "line" in the distance as well.

It's good nostalgia because it helps me remember why I keep doing graphic design at home and

studying it in class.

i think that nostalgia is good at times, but you can’t keep thinking about the past forever. it can get unhealthy, especially if you can’t let things go easily.

It would be great to feel like a kid again. With scraped knees and loose teeth. Back when staying up to eight was crazy, and having more than one page of homework was the most upsetting thing that could happen. Before we knew about the bad in the world. I want to live in the present again. Not thinking about future tests and writing notes on things I won’t remember. Not memorizing facts and numbers and dates. I like my nostalgia, it’s a reminder of what I had, even when I had experienced so little in life that every other problem was the worst event to have ever dealt with.

I think nostalgia is good for reminiscing about fun memories but it is also good to move and look forward in to the next step in your life.

My opinion - I'm somewhat in the middle I do think that it's okay to look back and remember how stuff used to be, it's okay to miss things or miss how things used to be. What I don't think is okay is when people get too stuck in the past, they don't want to do or try new things because they are so attached to how things used to be.They are so stuck in the past that they can't move forward. So I think being nostalgic is okay to a certain extent.

It would be a good nostalgia because it helps me remind why I keep pushing and why I keep playing. It pushes me to want the feeling of scoring more.

2) Table #3 did pretty good and I think they did good on the slides with no to little words and a lot of visuals.

Remembering good memories from the past isn't harmful to me and this kind of nostalgia is positive.

#2 - I think table 8 did a good job on their presentation. Not only did they do really good without their final partner, they also helped me get a lot of notes from their editorial and was probably the most notes of all the editorials.

I think table 5 did great with their explanation and reasoning.

A presentation that stood out to me was Table 7’s they did a very good job!

I think table 1 did good on understanding what the author wanted to tell us with their argument, and executed what they had to say with the authors evidence well.

I think table 5 definitely was the best. Their explanations were thought out.

I think table 8 did well, with enough words to get a good idea of the article, and it was very visually appealing in the images used.

I don’t remember the table number, but whoever did the article by McQuarrie did good.

I found this quote interesting beocuse it shows that she has tried to stop being so nostalgic, she has tried to forget all about her past but no matter how hard she tries her past still manages to come back and haunt her.

This quote was significant to me because it tied into that feeling on how nostalgia can be a good thing or can be helpful especially during hard times.

This was worth it of quoting Because Kathy was saying how she would crash the car one day because of how distracted she gets when she driving because of nostalgia, every time she drives past something that reminds her of hailsham she gets really distracted

This quote shows how exhausted she was from being a carer. Showing how she’s different from everyone how her line of work works her so much that she doesn't have enough energy for all of it.

Table 5 did a good job on their presentation. I liked the visuals and it seemed overall pretty organized.

Is hailsham real ? Why is it “impossible” for her to have found it.

This quote shows how at Hailsham the kids were made to depend on each other and work with each other. The quote also shows how the kids valued each other at Hailsham.

This is something Ruth said about Tommy and his trouble making art pieces for the exchange.

This quote shows how Tommy, A Hailsham student, lacks creativity. This quote makes me question how “special” Hailsham students actually are. If not creativity, what special qualities do they look for in students at Hailsham?

This quote is worthy because it shows how when she looked back on her nostalgia she was able to evaluate the effect it had on everyone there, including her. It shows the theme of her being trapped since she reflects on how they were dependent on each other for personal possessions.

Is Hailsham a school that revolves around art? Why is creativity so valued at Hailsham?

This quote shows the apathy in the childhoods of Ruth, Kathy, Tommy, and their other classmates. It was unnerving how the students watched, not worrying for Tommy, but in fact laughing at his sadness. They believed Tommy deserved to be bullied because he couldn’t control his emotional reactions. Showing emotions-or perhaps negative emotions specifically-at Hailsham is strongly discouraged.

It could be that they are raised to be carers, and once they have been too exposed to the real world, starting to understand that Hailsham might not be the dream they remembered, they are turned to donors.

Donors are normally agitated, in pain, and must be sedated to keep quiet. This could be because they would otherwise try to rebel or convince others to.

This quote stood out to me because why is someone telling you that you don’t have to be creative make you feel better. Shouldn’t that already be known?

I found this interesting because it relates to nostalgia a lot and it shows how you change everyday and it makes you think of memories of yourself and who you used to be

This quote really stood out to me because this might reveal how the outside world view the “special” students at Hailsham. And if the truth is revealed to the students, maybe this could spark themes of rebellion?

This was worthy of anotations because it showed how Tommy changed his hole personality over night and it was very important because it showed how people in hailsham and how they can change.

I also agree with the fact that they emphasized the artwork so much because it was a way people would remember them. At the end of the day they were made to donate so their artwork would be something that would still be there when the kids aren’t.

I disagree with the idea that the students are the end of the line and that that’s why they arent able to have kids but I believe more that they arent allowed to have kids for a different more important reason that relates to the donations.

I agree with this question and I believe that the guardians don’t really want to work there. Miss Lucy is an example. She was always caring and it seemed like she really did care for them.

The significance of the rain

I agree that the author used the rain on purpose to grab our attention. It showed us the feeling that Miss Lucy had. It also shows the feeling around the kids.

Disagree : I disagree that They’re “not humans” because they can’t have kids. I just think that they are forced to believe they aren’t able to because they’re not ALLOWED to due to the organ donations

I disagree with Javier for stating that the students at Hailsham don’t realize that all their future dreams are gonna be crushed, because I think they already know that well because Miss Lucy had already told them the truth.

it could also be possible that the reason their parents are never mentioned is because their parents also went to hailsham and became donors.

I disagree I think that Mrs Lucy got brainwashed and they will be bringing her back because when she came back and starting talking to Tommy telling him that you have to be creative.

Disagree: Tommy filling a void with Ruth I believe is wrong bc it’s always possible he just has feelings for her

I disagree that Mrs Lucy left on her own and I believe that Mrs Lucy was made to leave. This would make more sense since she gave out the fact that they are going to be donaters directly unlike how other guardians were hinting at this which goes back to the idea that they were “told and not told”.

i agree that something definitely happened to her, but i personally think that she was killed off by the staff. i feel like it would kind of make sense that they would kill people that threaten hailshams privacy and their secrets coming out, since they’re basically raising kids to get their organs harvested.

I do agree with the fact that miss Lucy wasn’t okay with that hailsham was doing and she might say something after she left but I don’t think they would have killed her.

Ruth and Tommy had a fight? Send Kathy in to help Ruth because Tommy is more likely to listen.

Who went to warn Tommy about his favorite shirt when he was upset? Kathy, strange how she didn’t watch and laugh like Ruth did.

Who does Tommy tell about Miss Lucy? Kathy, he knows he can trust her.

Who does Tommy go to when he fears his elbow being unzipped? Kathy, he feels safe and trusts her with his health.

I acknowledge that the novel is from Kathy’s perspective, but it barely talks about Tommy and Ruth’s relationship. They don’t seem close, which makes it strange that they would date at all.

Kathy is a carer, but not for much longer. Carer careers last for fourteen years at most, and that combined with the age when students leave Hailsham as adults is close to thirty five.

If people who went to Hailsham become donors before becoming middle-aged, then not being a carer anymore could be a sign that donations are approaching.

Being carers could be used as a way to mentally prepare for inevitable donations with practiced exposure and seeing its effects firsthand.

This nostalgia Kathy feels so strongly could be her trying to relive as much of her life as possible before donating.

She would end up heavily sedated with very little left to do except remember. She could be writing in a journal to remind herself of her past if the drugs effect memory.

I agree with the idea that the rain represents Miss Lucy’s sorrow because she feels bad that she can’t help the kids become anything else in the future.

I also agree how the their is something off with the children they aren’t normal.

I agree I don’t think the kids can deny the organ donations.

I don’t think they can rebel seeing how miss Lucy behaved like a person in a cage and how Kathy seemed disconnected with her work it seems like it was just a destiny they had to accept.

I think miss Lucy doesn’t control and manipulate Tommy. She’s more of a person who took care of him because she saw he was struggling. She tried to guide him.

I disagree that the studetns will rebel and create something because they will just end up realizing that if they rebel others who need their organs will suffer more Than the studetns will.

I believe Miss Lucy had a positive impact because she was always caring for the kids and she helped Tommy feel better about himself.

Did my feelings change for her?

My feelings to Miss Lucy changed because at first she was a normal guardian but as we went on, she started to help out the kids and really did care. She risked everything to help the kids.

I disagree that weird and different isnt different being weird makes an another person and makes you who you are. Like so Tommy’s outburst makes him different and unique from the other studetns but doesnt exactly make him weird.

While I was writing this I heard Omar say that Tommy is more human than the others, which I also agree with a lot, because I also think the students are not organic humans.

i feel like the reason they have such strict and repetitive schedule and behaviors is just a result of their environment and hailshams standards. they’re so used to hailshams schedules that they probably don’t know it’s abnormal.

I disagree that the kids are made just for the specific actions of becoming carers or donors, but I do think that they could’ve been grouped together at a young age to go to this school since they all coincidentally can’t have babies

I agree that if anything Tommy is more human than the rest of the kids because he’s the only one that’s not as good as the rest, he’s the only one that needs help from other people.

i believe that they are also donating their reproductive organs/cells (uterus, sperm etc) because those are also pretty important and can be donated.

giving birth can also harm the vital organs which is why they dont want the students diddling each other

if there is a population decline in the outside world, it would make sense that their reproductive systems would also be taken.
