The comic: Emily Carroll's Through the Woods collects five dark fairytales which may seem familiar at first, but quickly take surprising turns. As readers travel through the woods (i.e. read the book), they'll encounter "Our Neighbor's House," though they may not be able to return, and meet a young bride in a secretive old house in "A Lady's Hands Are Cold." The collection also asks what's haunting "My Friend Janna" and reveals dark secrets about the narrator's soon-to-be sister-in-law in "The Nesting Place." Through the Woods also prints the webcomic "His Face All Red."

Why it's scary: The Brothers Grimm may have done it first, but they certainly didn't do it best. Carroll's award-winning writing and illustrations are sharply on display in this graphic anthology, which plays with every sense to create a truly immersive and visceral reading experience. There's just enough left up to the reader's imagination for them to incorporate their deepest fears, and each story tugs at a different core memory for anyone who remembers being read or told fairytales as a kid.

Their love is so pure that angels become jealous, killing Annabel Lee. Her lover sleeps by her grave every night, since even death is not strong enough to destroy their love.

The central message of "Annabel Lee" is that love can transcend death. Poe introduces this message by describing the deep love between Annabel Lee and the speaker. The speaker claims their love was all-consuming and that this unusual love was a source of envy even for the angels of heaven.

Recipe

We decided to do our recipe of witch finger cookies.Because they actually look like they are a real witch finger and are also a great idea for halloween.

A witch finger cookie is exactly what it sounds like: a short bread cookie dyed green, shaped into a severed finger, and adorned with an almond nail and a bit of blood-red jam. For a little added texture and flavor, I added chopped pistachios. As it turns out, pistachio chunks also make for great witch warts! If you're a nut-free household however, feel free to skip the pistachios and walnuts and use large coconut flakes to make monster fingers instead. You can use cherry, strawberry, or raspberry jam for the blood-colored jam—the choice is yours!

To get these to come out looking like actual fingers, don’t skip the dough chilling! This is the most crucial step for baking shaped shortbread cookies. Getting the dough freezer-cold means that the butter in the dough will melt slowly in the hot oven, helping the dough keep its shape instead of spreading. Cold dough is also easier to shape and decorate, so you can have perfectly scary cookies with way less effort.

The ingredients are:

1 1/4 c.

(142 g.) powdered sugar

1 c.

(2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

1

large egg

1 tsp.

almond extract

1 tsp.

pure vanilla extract

5 to 6 drops green food coloring

2 3/4 c.

(330 g.) all-purpose flour

1 tsp.

kosher salt

1/2 c.

finely chopped pistachios (about 70 g.), plus more for decorating

3/4 c.

sliced almonds (about 85 g.)

1/2 c.

(135 g.) cherry, strawberry, or raspberry jam

How to prepare it:

Step 1In the large bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment (or in a large bowl using an electric mixer) on medium speed, beat powdered sugar and butter until pale and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add egg and continue to beat until incorporated and fluffy, about 1 minute more. Add almond extract, vanilla extract, and food coloring and beat until combined.

Step 2In a small bowl, whisk flour and salt. Add to butter mixture and beat on low speed until just combined. Fold in pistachios. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 30 minutes or up to 2 days.

Step 3Line 2 rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper. Remove one-quarter of dough from refrigerator and portion into 12 to 13 (1-tablespoon) balls. Roll each ball between your palms until it starts to form a finger shape, about 3"-by-1/2", or the length of your pinky finger but slightly thinner. Arrange logs on prepared sheet and press an almond slice into each, where the nail would be on a finger. Carefully pinch dough just below almond and halfway down log to create a knuckle. Using a sharp knife, carve horizontal lines of varying lengths into knuckle. Place 1 or 2 pistachio pieces in finger to make warts. Repeat with remaining dough. Freeze 30 minutes.

Step 4Preheat oven to 375°. Bake, rotating trays front to back halfway through, until edges are firm and tops of cookies are dry, 7 to 9 minutes, Let cool slightly.

Step 5Gently lift off almond fingernail. Add a tiny dab of jam to tip of finger, then replace almond fingernail, pressing down to make jam ooze out. Spread jam onto bottom of each finger. Let cookies cool completely.

The cabin

A hiker decided to go on a hike by himself. Something he was not very used to. The whole day was normal. Trees and bushes engulfed his surroundings. He enjoyed being outdoors in the mountains. Nothing seemed strange to him, that was until he was making his way back to his car. He figured an eight hour hike was good enough. The sky was already getting dark and he needed to get back, fast. What was odd was how much he didn’t recognize the trail back. He began to panic.

Night had already taken over and all he had was a flashlight and no clue on how to get back. He knew it was already too late and too dangerous to keep going through the perilous forest. He began to worry that he would have no shelter for the night when almost luckily enough, he stumbled across a broken-down cabin. It was dark, and seemed like no one had visited it in years, but he knew it was the only place where he could rest until daylight, especially since his flashlight was running out of battery. He knocked on the door a few times but no one answered, so he let himself in where strangely enough, a perfect bed fitted for one person awaited him in the center. He knew that if the owner came back he could explain himself, he was sure that the owner wouldn’t mind, or was even probably dead. So he went ahead and got himself comfortable in bed. As he tried to sleep, he couldn’t ignore the collection of paintings around the room; portraits of strange looking people all peering at him, each wearing a smile that sent chills up his spine. Not too long after his exhaustion from the hike got the best of him and he was able to ignore the faces.

The next morning he got up early and was shocked to see that there were no paintings around the room, but windows…

We choose to talk about this short story because of how creepy it is.We all think that the situation would have been better if he didn't notice there were windows instead of paintings. It must have been really traumatic to first being lost at the woods in the of the night, second sleeping at a creepy cabin where there are ''paintings'' of people staring at you, but the worst thing fore sure was waking up and realizing that the paintings were actually windows. This short story had no images and we got this cabin image from google to represent the cabin where the hiker sleeps.

This great and also very creepy short story was written by

Zoea Maland.
