What does "information literacy" mean to you?

For me, information literacy is how we find, assess, and effectively use the information we gather.

How will you need information literacy skills in the specific industry in which you will work after graduation?

In the Business Administration field, information literacy is critical. When you’re in the business field, you need to know the trends and current events that are happening, not only in your country but also around the world because businesses are now aiming for globalization. I can use information literacy skills when researching trends and current events that can help the company I work with. By evaluating the information I got critically, I will be able to apply that information effectively. Then, when I apply it effectively, the business will be a success. It is a ripple effect. So, it’s critical to have information literacy skills.

Give specific examples ( e.g. as a teacher, a chef, a business manager etc.) of the types of lifelong learning and research you will need to participate in as a successful employee in your specific field (the program you are studying at Humber College)

I have an experience as a marketing assistant back in the Philippines so, after graduation, I plan to work as a Marketing Specialist. If I become a marketing specialist, the lifelong learning that I need to have is to stay updated on trends in marketing, especially in digital marketing. Right now, digital platforms such as Google, Facebook, or Instagram are being used as marketing tools to reach a wider audience. In that case, I can use my information literacy skills to research my target audience and competitors. Knowing how to apply the information I got from researching is critical in my field because you need to know how to effectively reach your target audience. And when you can persuade them to buy and use your product, that’s the time that you can say that your marketing strategy is a success.

What is Academic Integrity?

Academic integrity means that every student needs to be honest, fair, have courage, and can be trusted. We as students, need to have these characteristics.

What is Your Responsibility?

Responsibility is being accountable for the actions that I do. So for example, if I need to pass an assignment, it is my responsibility to ensure that I will pass it on time. If not, I will hold myself accountable for the consequences of not passing my assignment on time.

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is taking someone else’s work without giving them credit. It is when you use a piece of information for an assignment and don’t put the sources you used.

Among the five essential values related to academic integrity, which one/ones do you feel is important to you and why?

For me, responsibility is important to me. Because when you’re responsible everything will follow. For example, if I have a research, it is my responsibility to pass it on time, and not plagiarize. In that case, professors will trust me and I also displayed fairness because I didn’t cheat. So for me, responsibility is the most important.

Do you think academic integrity should be practiced in the workplace as well as in our academic life? Give one example to show how academic integrity plays a crucial role in the workplace. (You might need to do some research on this topic. Remember to give appropriate citation).

Yes! Academic integrity plays a crucial role in the workplace. Commitment to the five principles is a must to make sure that there is respect in the workplace. I’ll give an example based on my current job. I am in customer service at a shipping company. My main job is to enter orders coming from Costco. It is my responsibility to make sure that I will enter the right order. Because if not, customers will be dissatisfied and return the item to us. It is a loss for the company to receive returned items so, it is really important to enter the right order. that I entered the right order. I should also be honest when doing my work so that, my co-workers will trust me. Also, when I saw that one of my co-workers did something wrong, I should have the courage to tell them that it was not right and that we should follow the rules.

PART 2

In the sections on Academic Dishonesty and Misrepresentation of Personal performance are there any points you were not aware of before? What are they?

So far, I am aware of the guidelines regarding academic dishonesty and misrepresentation of personal performance. I really made sure to know these things before studying at Humber so that, I wouldn’t accidentally do something that was against Humber’s academic rules.

What is your responsibility as a student of Humber College to maintain academic integrity?

My responsibility as a student of Humber College to maintain academic integrity is to follow the rules. That is the most basic thing that I have to do. Second is, to influence my classmates to follow the rules as well so that, we will have a healthy environment.

Do you consider yourself to be a high or low context communicator? Explain why and give a few examples to illustrate your answer.

I’m more of a low-context communicator. I like it when people I talk to are direct to the point. I’m also straightforward when it comes to expressing my ideas. I’ll give you a real-life scenario I’m facing right now. I got hired two months ago, so I’m new to my job right now. I often ask my workmates if I’m confused or don’t know what to do. They are high-context communicator so when I ask a question, they don’t answer me directly, they’ll tell a bunch of information (which is not my concern) before telling me what to do. It’s good, but sometimes, if I don’t get the answer right away, I’ll get confused even more. But I love it when my manager is there because she is a low-context communicator. If I have a question, she’ll answer me directly. No other information is included. That’s why it’s easier for me to understand her instructions than my workmates. Another example is when someone is giving me directions. When I don’t know how to get to a certain place, such as a coffee shop, I just want to know what bus number I need to get and where should I drop off. I don’t want to know what the place looks like, what other buses are going there, or what mall is there beside the coffee shop I’m going to.

But of course sometimes, when I feel like I need to be a high-context communicator, I can adjust. Especially when I’m talking to someone and our topic is quite sensitive and personal, I go with the high-context communication style.

So for me, we should learn how to be high-context and low-context communicators. Especially in the business industry, we face different types of people. We should learn how to adjust for us to be a better communicator.

What specific benefits would motivate employees in your culture? How are they viewed in Canada?

Based on my work experience in the Philippines, the specific benefits that would motivate us in our culture are:

We use professional titles when speaking to someone. We are not used to calling someone by their names only. So, whenever we talk, we can feel that we respect each other. Here in Canada, they are used to calling each other by name, so I feel like Canadians won’t like this idea, because to them, speaking casually is more acceptable.

Managers and supervisors are hands-on in their teams. They ensure no one is left behind by guiding them every step of the way. For example, when I was receiving negative surveys, me and my team manager had a one-on-one coaching session. While here in Canada, my manager allows me to make mistake and figure it out on my own. She will just help me if I’m really having a hard time. I think Canadians value learning on their own even if you make mistakes at first. On the other hand, Filipinos don’t like mistakes. They would rather teach you how to do it correctly, even if it’s spoon feeding than make mistakes. Some Filipino employees benefit from this type of culture but some don’t.

Filipinos love to celebrate every little thing. Every month, they have something to celebrate and employees love this! They are motivated to go to work and join if they are looking forward to something fun. For example, there are department design contests every Valentine's Day, Halloween, and Christmas. I think Canadians would like this too. Because of what I’ve observed, the Canadian workplace is too serious.

Topic: Microaggressions in the workplace or community

Microaggressions have significant impacts and should be taken seriously because it signal disrespect and reflect inequality. Creating inclusive workplaces requires actively fighting microaggressions by understanding, recognizing, and responding. Also, creating an inclusive culture is a continuous journey requiring awareness, learning, and intentional communication. This effort positively affects mental health and well-being at work. Leaders should provide training about avoiding microaggression in the workplace. Consistently correcting microaggressions prevents them from becoming part of the organization’s culture.

Explanation:

I selected this topic because I've noticed that microaggressions are prevalent in our workplace. Even though my colleagues are generally kind, they often speak negatively about one another. I aim to educate my coworkers about microaggressions to foster a safer and healthier work environment.

Washington, E. F.
