Language barriers are how to play a game without knowing the rules!

Language barriers refer to the difficulties individuals face in communication due to differences in language or dialect (Fiveable, n.d.). These difficulties can occur because people speak different languages and don't use the same gestures and signs to talk.

Nowadays, it is common for early childhood educators to experience these difficulties with children and their families.

In this op-ed paper, I will discuss the impact of language barriers in early education, examples, and strategies to overcome language barriers.

For more information go to this link: https://www.familyeducation.com/toddlers/growth-development/language/how-to-tackle-language-barriers-in-early-years#:~:text=Children%20experience%20challenges%20if%20they,language%20and%20interpret%20gestures%20properly.

Educators' intervention in addressing language barriers is crucial for helping children overcome these difficulties. There are some helpful strategies to overcome language barriers:

Educators can use sign language to overcome communication while improving language skills. Through sign language and visual aids, educators can help children who have difficulties to speak and express themselves.

Educators should also encourage Talking, reading, and signing in their native language and English. According to Chank, 2022, "Talking to the child about what is going on in the present moment, narrating your actions in plain language, and naming objects can be effective ways for them to make connections between what they’re seeing and what they’re hearing. The previous quote highlights the importance of encouraging the use of different resources that help children overcome language barriers.

The use of online translation tools can help educators to communicate better with children.

By exploring this topic, I found common language barriers we as educators might find in our children while working in the field.

Not Being a Native English Speaker: Children whose English language is not their first language might encounter challenges when they enter an English-speaking country and then education. These children might have issues with understanding instructions, participating in different activities, and expressing themselves, which can cause frustration and rejection.

Bilingualism: These children can communicate in both languages; however, they could experience some language delays in both languages because one of them is being used most frequently at home, causing these difficulties. Bilingual education would help these children to be successful.

Selective Mutism: According to Family and Education (n.d). Selective mutism is a childhood anxiety disorder where a child does not speak in certain settings but will speak in other settings. This disorder can often be mistaken for a language barrier, but it is an anxiety disorder that requires extra support from parents and educators.

Cultural differences: one of the aspects that affect children's language acquisition is the culture they are raised in. When parents are from different cultures, they tend to talk to their children differently. Furthermore, they have different accents and idioms that are unique to their culture.

Deafness: The child can also have hearing problems, which can affect their communication skills. This also affects their speech.

Educators should identify or stop these language barriers to help children develop their communication skills.

For more information visit the following link: https://www.familyeducation.com/toddlers/growth-development/language/how-to-tackle-language-barriers-in-early-years#:~:text=Children%20experience%20challenges%20if%20they,language%20and%20interpret%20gestures%20properly.
