The purpose of this tweet is to address concerns Trump has about the legitimacy of polls. By using twitter as the writing medium, Trump is able to use short, easily understood words. His vocabulary mimics that of a small child. This allows him to seem more personable to the less educated American.

Its talks about in detail everything that he has promised and hopes to do in these first 100 days that he has. Many different words are used throughout the article, with some emphasizing some of his more bizarre ideas and some that suggest that maybe some ideas can be better for the country. The article is a bit lengthy but nothing that is too long to drag the readers attention away from. I think this broad description and in depth analysis of the topic helps the reader see how much is really going on in the White House right now. It almost has to be written out to this degree for the reader to understand just how complex the ideas that are being discussed by the President truly are.
Trevor Harris

Writing is the activity or skill of making a sequence of letters, words, or symbols marked on paper or some other surface.
My Article Link: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/what-sports-has-taught-us
This article seems kind of cheesy but it actually has a lot of valuable points. The writer chose to talk through sports to tell about important life lessons. This article is very laid back , meaning it is not proper or extremely sophisticated. The writer wrote it in somewhat of a conversation form. He asks questions throughout the article only to answer them in the next sentence with advice. I enjoy this type of writing. It is easier for me to comprehend and I am more interested in what I am reading. The writer did not use advanced vocabulary, nor did he need to, he kept it simple. This article was short and sweet. The writer made his point, wrote a few sentences explaining why he believes what he does, and then moved on to the next topic. The writer also incorporated pictures and videos into his article. I feel that that is very beneficial because it gives the reader a break from constant text. I really value articles like this because I retain a lot of information from them. If it is too long, I get bored. If it uses extreme vocabulary that I don't understand, I feel that there is no point in reading it. If it is all tiny text with back to back paragraphs, I tend to skip over it. I enjoyed reading this article because of its structure and way of writing.
Kenzie Duncan

Bo Burnham Poem

**Vulgar Language Ahead** I'm sorry about the size
Bo Burnham is (or was i guess?) a comedian who wrote and published his book of poems "Egghead" in October 2013. His poem, "I Fuck Sluts," has heavily permeated the internet since its print debut, and with good reason. The poem heavily relies on increasingly offensive and demeaning phrases about the women the narrator has sex with-"skinny with big tits or skinny with small ones" and "perky, preppy, or posh" are just a few of the provoking phrases. The poem continues in this way, in a way getting more and more obstinate. But then the narrator starts using more conventional and socially accepted ways of describing women; the narrator says that "some sluts" are smart and pretty and "can lift all your thoughts from your dick to your heart". The sudden change of pace tricks the reader into thinking that the narrator has maybe fallen in love and changed his mind. But, the biggest twist is to find out that the narrator objectifies women because of the "sluts" that are different. The narrator's heart was broken and, instead of going through the process of mourning and grieving in a healthy way, their entire viewpoint of women was warped. I think that Burnham successfully uses writing to misdirect the reader and change their perception of a person who is at least really irritating if not extremely misogynistic. At a greater analysis, Burnham succinctly shows the effects of a society that values masculinity and punishes emotions in men. The narrator had no outlet to emotionally overcome their heartbreak, and instead became emotionally stunted and began to regard women only as sex objects.
https://nicaless.wordpress.com/2013/10/17/im-an-egghead-youre-an-egghead/
Claire La Fontaine

Paint a picture. It'll take longer.

https://www.facebook.com/WelcomeToNightVale/posts/1152434261543399

This post is a satyrical reference to a common idiom in modern America. The phrase it is referencing is "Take a picture, it will last longer." This sarcastic sequence of words is normally used when the user is in an embarrassing situation and realizes that their peers are watching the situation unfold, then to acknowledge the fact that they have just been caught doing something embarrassing, the user will say "Take a picture, it will last longer" to the other party. Now, to get to the post, it is a play on words to the reader. At first glance they think it is the initial, more common phrase; however, on a second look they will realize it is something else, and quite clever. The use of "paint" instead of "take" references a former way of stationary imagery, which quite obviously takes longer then snapping a picture with a camera. It also takes a great deal of skill and caution, this is why the next part of the phrase says "it will take longer" instead of "it will last longer."
Austin Vogelsang

There have been many people close to me who have fallen into the deepest stages of depression. This small piece of writing immediately caught my attention when searching for something that could help me explain, in my opinion what writing is, and what it does. This writing takes a simple idea of someone screaming in a room, and uses it to display the way someone is feeling. This writing is short but has such a huge idea that it is trying to portray. It is an easy concept for someone to think of how it would feel to be in a room full of people screaming. However, not being able to be heard or understood by anyone in the room is an unimaginable feeling. The importance of writing is clear after reading this because it shows how writing can help people interpret how they are feeling inside. People are able to use writing to express themselves and also to express ideas.

There is a clear purpose that the writer, Derek Magill, is trying to get across. He is giving advice to all people looking to apply to a job. He creates this article based upon two things, a value proposition and a resume. He clearly defines a value proposition and provides perfect evidence that is relevant to 2017. The author writes with passion and uses power words that give me energy when I read. At some parts he is short and to the point. Other times he is long and descriptive. He gives bullet points and bolds the most important things to read. His writing is engaging, especially since it is in a blog format. It is not long and I believe he does that for a reason. He wants to make a claim that is sharp and to the point so that the reader can act and engage.

Luis Vargas

The writing describes every sky watching event of February to happen. The article itself is long, but the subsection of each event is short and I perceive this to be because the author wanted quick explanations as to not bore the reader with specific details that they possibly would not understand unless they were an Astronomer. I also believe the author used the dates and event names as subtitles in the article is so that readers could quickly find a specific event they want to watch, so that a reader could skip to a certain day they wanted to watch the sky, or in thought of a reader picking up the article after a week through February, but they could still skip to the day they are reading or the days ahead. The author also uses easily understood words so that anyone could comprehend what he is conveying and he uses many words that are portrayed to be positive when read as to make these sky events seem just that more exciting.

This is a very big topic in our generation today so the comments were very opinionated, proving that even a small two to three sentence post can stir up a lot of conversation on the internet. It is nice to see all of the different opinions that can be shown via the internet.

The writing Robert Frost uses is pretty simple to where most anyone reading can understand what he is talking about. It also is written with enough detail to imagine the scene as you are reading.
What is Writing? (By: Evan Fiore)

Writing is a type of language that involves putting together letters and characters into words to compose texts, essays, books, and other forms of work for people to interpret and analyze.

My Article Link:
https://moviepilot.com/p/split-subtle-hint-changes-the-movie-and-a-future-sequel/4196917?utm_source=fb-stream-post&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=split-this-subtle-hint-will-forever-change-the-movie-and-its-sequel

Response:
The writing in this Facebook link informs the reader of the potential symbolism within the movie poster of "Split." The developer is using the poster to hide in plain sight, a secret that could explain the intentions for a sequel for the movie. The poster could be used to change people's perceptions of the movie after they had seen the film at least one time. For example, Rodrigo Mariano states, "This one subtle hint will forever change the movie and a future sequel." Additionally, the article contains spoilers that describe the movie and its ending. However, I will try to avoid typing spoilers in this response. The words that could have meaning to the overall point of the article are, "hint, twist, hid, reveal, evidence, and words like no idea." All the words resemble the thought of a secret. These words can spur excitement and encourage curiosity in the reader. This is so the reader will continue reading and become invested in the piece of work. These words could be used to incite an audience that wants to see another movie in this series. Furthermore, the writing in this article is long. I can infer from this article that it is long because the writer takes a while to explain the hidden message in the movie poster and goes into detail on what it means for the movie. For example, the writer links "Split" to the movie "Unbreakable." The resemblance between the movies happens in both movie posters. The writer even goes into detail, explaining how the cracks in what looks like a mirror in both posters, match up almost perfectly. Both posters also show the face of a main character in their movies. I have provided a picture below to show how the movies could be related. Without spoiling too much, the cracks in the posters and the subtle hint ask a question that relates to death and how one character links to another in the movies.

For those who are unfamiliar, roughly three years ago, 30-year-old Justine Sacco, senior director of corporate communications at IAC, sent out a tweet that she would never live down. While on a trip to Cape Town, South Africa, Sacco tweeted “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!” This tweet sparked an unforeseeable amount of backlash and accusations of racism and white privilege. As a healthy, white male living in the United States, I personally perceived this piece of writing to be one of light-hearted humor. I do concede, however, that it was done in extremely poor taste. As a result of the poor taste, many people took great offense to the tweet. The language that is being used is particular to twitter rather than to a specific technique or message. Brief sentences that are right to the point make up the usual syntax found on social media sites. All in all, I think it is safe to say that Justine Sacco has a terrible taste in humor and in this instance, it cost her a job.

Emily Dobbs
This is a political cartoon that appeared in the Los Angeles Times that is criticizing Trump supporters who try and justify Donald Trump's actions. Because this is a political cartoon, it's message is biased and is taking a liberal stance. It may not have a lot of sentences but it says a lot about the artist's opinions on the issues in American politics. The artist utilizes repetition and hyperbole to further their opinion. When the daughter says she can show her father "347 examples of trump making stuff up," it may have been an exaggeration to prove a point that Trump often makes things up to instill hate in his supporters. The father repeats "Make America Great Again!" in an effort to deny his daughter's evidence that Trump has constantly lied. This also demonstrates that a majority of Trump's supporters were white males over the age of 65. By using print as well as visuals, the artist is able to successfully convey their message. It is also ironic that the title of this political cartoon is "Denial Ain't Just a River in Egypt..." because Egypt is listed under the new immigration ban. This wasn't the case when this cartoon was created but it is interesting how the title unknowingly foreshadowed the events that have recently occurred.

Her writing may be opinionated but she gives specific and concise points in a short list format to back up why she believes this image is wrong and inappropriate considering the current situation. She also displays the image referenced and uses clear and simple wording which makes the article all the more approachable and understandable. Something I really appreciate about this article is the fact that she does not take a defensive point of view, but a rather constructive one. The reasons she gives to support her views are not only about Muslim culture and the significance of hujub but also about what the American flag entails in a wider global scheme. Both of these are topics that not many people are keen on writing about, which actually creates a stronger interest from the reader (or maybe just me).

The author, Neil Pane is using a lot of football terms and statistics vocabulary that may not be well known to everyone who might read it. He does a good job of persuading the audience as to why Matt Ryan is now an elite quarterback by backing up his argument with statistics such as having the sixth highest passer rating in NFC Championship history this past Sunday. Although it’s a relatively short piece, he gives the reader charts which include how certain statistics such as passer rating, yards, and touchdowns affect the outcomes of games which back up his main point. The use of interactive graphics throughout grab the reader’s attention as opposed to just words on a page making for an easier read.

Though this particular writing has a limit on characters, I believe that it is still effective in explaining an opinion and elaborating on why that is the opinion of an individual. Obviously, President Trump has a view of immigration and has acted to do what he sees is best for America based off his view. Through his tweet, he points to the fact that to be recognized as a country, that country have borders and be able to protect them or control them in one way or another. If you are not able to control who crosses your borders, are you able to truly control or protect them? If a country cannot control who is permitted to cross its borders, then it is essentially without true borders. They only represent territory and not the population of the citizens. Though there are extremes like North Korea that have total border protection where no one is allowed in or out, and the countries of the European Union have borders that essentially are allowed to be freely crossed by whoever whenever, most countries of the world do have specific rules and regulations in regards to their border and the process of crossing into or exiting the country, as well as requirements that must be met to protect the safety of the domestic population. Though I've well exceeded the characters used in a tweet, I do believe that I picked out the intended meaning of the message.

This article states the many poor living conditions, economy status and issues that the Mexican people have to make a living in. This is important to me because there is so much ignorance in the world and its so disturbing to hear people talk down on people who come here looking for a better life. My parents came here as immigrants and to this day work their butts off to give my brother and I everything. In reading this article many people would understand why coming to the U.S might be the only choice and maybe give some insight to what it looks like living in Mexico. The words being used are small but educated, easy to understand though. Its a fairly short read but its designed with bullet points to separate the reasons clearly. I think its made that way so people can see ALL the reasons and know that its just one reason jumbled together. All reasons are separated by a headline as well. This article in general was made to educate the public using facts.
-Nancy Rios

The other thing is the physicality. He plays with a hit-first mentality and I think that can help us also,” - Clifford. In this article, there are subsections to the paper. One of these subsections is titled "Clifford: Hibbert couldn’t stay healthy". The purpose of this section of the article is to provide a background to the reader on why the Hornets got rid of Hibbert in the trade for Plumlee. In this section, the author used quotes from Clifford, stats of Hibbert during the season, and previous injuries Hibbert had in order to back up the decision made from the Hornets in trading Hibbert.
- Josh Martin

Writing: a way for humans to communicate through non-verbal means.

My Article: mssiciliano.cmswiki.wikispaces.net/file/view/Decorum.doc

The article that I chose, "Today's graduates lack basic decorum", by Mark Bauerlein, summarizes why todays college graduates are not up to the standards their employers want them to be. Bauerlein opens up the article with a story about a student in one of his classes who showed up 25 minutes late to a test. When the time ended Bauerlein collected the papers, the student who came in late looked at him and asked if he could have another 20 minutes because he was late. Bauerlein responded with shaking his head and said, "Can't do that." This story exemplifies what Bauerlein goes on to talk about in the rest of the article. He proceeds to say kids today lack employability skills, they feel they have a sense of entitlement, and their lack of focus is blamed on multitasking. Bauerlein then goes on to blame teachers, parents and professors for the kids lack of employability skills. High school teachers are blamed for inflating grades, and for letting students text and be on their phones in the classroom, and "College professors, too, have no direct incentive to raise the bar, given the influence of student ratings of there performance and pressure from administrators and parents." The type of reddrick that is being used in this article is degrading. Bauerlein is using words like "crushing deficiency," "blamed," "lack," "inflation," and "unfocused" to depict his viewpoints. The length of this article is very suitable for what the author conveying. He gets all of his view points across and the article is not too long that the reader overwhelmed.

Among the million definitions of writing out there, I feel it's safe to say that writing is simply a way to express and transform your thoughts, ideas, beliefs, etc. into words non-verbally. There are no wrong or right definitions of writing because it's interpreted differently by everyone, but I think we can all agree to some degree that it allows you to "silently" speak, if you will (even though you are actually still speaking...so complex, huh?).

- Brittany Stanley

This quote, by unknown, serves as a short and sweet reminder to just stay weird. Do the things that you may be afraid of doing out of fear of being judged because they are "not normal" or "weird". Through the use of upside down text, one is automatically made aware that the quote is different from other typical quotes, but it was purposefully constructed that way. The ultimate message here is to be different, even if that means remaining who you are. Stay weird. Do not change for anyone or anything. Being normal is too overrated, which is exactly why the quote is portrayed upside down. The words being used are short as a way of being very straight-forward.

The article first explains what ADHD is and slightly elaborates on it. The article progresses to explaining common assumptions made, things that people with ADHD feel, and the struggles that someone who has ADHD faces. I myself am not very familiar with ADHD although I have known people who live with it everyday. This article clarified what ADHD is and what it can be like for people living with it, which is something that has always been very vague and generalized to me. The writer makes the article easy to follow and a pretty easy read as it is broken up into main points with some type of photo and elaboration underneath. I think the fact that the article is short and relatively to the point helps the reader stay engaged and really understand some of what ADHD is. The article is also written with the help of three people in their twenties dealing with ADHD and they list some things that they deal with and/or want people to know and understand.

The first, and my favorite, being the comedic stance that the tweet holds. The tweet starts the readers train of thought in one direction, then switches half way to make one "laugh." Another lens to view the tweet from is through the serious matters that the words describe: drinking, gun violence, novelty. One might think that a joke about gun violence is never acceptable, or that the creation of new ideas that the author references is something that should be strived for. For example, if there was a way for a gun to monitor alcohol levels and NOT let you use it, then that would be a useful invention. Personally, I think the tweet is hilarious and I love all of the author's satirical tweets that he has. They're short, simple to understand, and easy to share with others.

-Carter Mitchell

Writing is an expression, a communication, an art form, a function; its limitless in purpose as it can be practical in its usage but it does not have to be.

Article Link: http://www.katebernheimer.com/images/Fairy%20Tale%20is%20Form.pdf

This essay is one of my favorite essays, called “Fairy Tale Is Form, Form Is Fairy Tale,” by Kate Bernheimer. It is a analytical essay, a scholarly critical thought on fairy tales and their impact on writing and literature. Not only does she make an elegant argument in the name of fairy tales, but she deconstructs the genre as a whole. Bernheimer dives into the technicals of language and elements of writing and what makes some fairy tales so masterful as pieces of the written word. It's a fairly long piece but not so long for a scholarly essay, about 12 pages or so. In my opinion with a writer like Berheimer it could be much longer. Her writing is almost functioning both as an academic piece and as an art product itself. She's written a piece of art about other pieces of art. How meta. This essay is intriguing and delightful and nothing short of whimsical, something rather difficult if impossible to pull off for a scholarly written essay.

Firstly, the title alone is enough to catch someone’s attention, and have them want to read the article. The article itself starts with a bit of humor, saying that “there are two kinds of people in the world: Those who eat bugs knowingly and those who eat bugs unknowingly.” But it then goes into a more factual part, presenting the evidence as to the actual science behind what is happening. He uses a mixture of the two things to get your attention, then retain it. Despite being a more scientific based article, the author does not use many larger words, and keeps the reading to a pretty low level. It is also a relatively short article, which is slightly unusual for a science post, but it is being used more to tell readers about this interesting, and slightly disgusting, fact. It is less about explaining the science behind it, and more about the fact that it can happen.

Matthew LaCorte

This article is short and to the point, the reader will learn that China has claimed the title of the world's biggest producer of solar energy. The reader learns that China produces 77.42 gigawatts of clean energy yearly, which will eventually become over 180+ gigawatts in the next three years. The website the article is published on is an American website, which may somewhat influence Americans to see that clean energy is the next step we need to take in America. Some Americans have a preconceived idea that America is the "best" country out there, when it is not. Sure, it is better than most countries, but we are one of the top polluting countries in the world. The author uses very "user-friendly" words to not baffle readers that have a small vocabulary. I believe that this article will convince others that clean energy is the next "big" idea that we need to adopt in the American lifestyle.

She is not using formal language which keeps the piece casual since it is on social media. Her word choice also comes off ironic since she added in Merry Christmas after that deep thought. In my search for an article to write about, I found that no matter where I looked, whether is was a business article or a sports article, nearly all of them had a title evolving our new president in a negative way. Already I can tell that that any of those articles would have some bias away form President Trump, so I did not chose one with him in the title. In my article, "Top 20 Fields for internships: Get your skills on" the author talks about what many of my engineering professors have been informing us of every chance they get, and that is employers are not getting what they want or require out of most college graduates. This makes me question the value of even going to school to get an education. However, it is also said, not in this article, that you have to have a college degree to get a job and succeed in life, this is quite the oxymoron to me. The purpose of this article is to inform college students and other people about what jobs are in high demands right now and what type of skills these employers are looking for. This article is directly aimed at people who are looking for an internship which is most likely a college student. This article is also helpful for people trying to decide what career path to take because it list the demand for the position. I found this article particularly helpful because it lists some major skills and abilities that the majority of engineering employers want in an intern. The list is short and to the point, which is perfect because it highlights the top fields, then get a little more descriptive with each job. This is beneficial to the reader so that he or she and look directly at their respective field. Overall this was a very informative article that was short and got to the point quickly.

Max Peterson

The language used is not complex or complicated; it is simple and beautiful. I believe that it doesn't matter how long the piece is; sometimes the shortest works hold the most significance. This one in particular post can really make you picture this person they are speaking of, and many people can probably relate to it.

Writing is the ability for one to express their thoughts or ideas through unspoken words.

http://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-curry-contract-2017-1

This article on Steph Curry headlines his thoughts on money. Curry states that worrying about making a certain amount of money leads to bigger issues. This is interesting because Curry is a two time MVP of the NBA and labeled as one of the best basketball players in the world. The best players should get paid the most, right? That's not how Curry or the author picture it. Regardless of Curry's contract, he loves the game of basketball, and we should strive to seek happiness instead of wealth like Curry. The author indicates that Curry has taken less amounts of money than he could have, but that has not stopped him from playing great basketball. Money does not create life-long happiness, but doing something you love can.

Bradley Clark

It gives information to the reader about the United State's new president and what some of his new policies are. The article also gives opinion from the different political parties and how they view the situation. There are statistics that support what the writer is trying to show and also quotes of things that were said by other people to show their different opinions.

Writing is a way to express the things you cherish, believe, love, hate, disagree with, or anything you are thinking in a way that is simple for other to read, react and empathize with.

This is a letter from a six year old boy named Alex. He wrote this letter to President Obama because of a picture he saw of a young Syrian refugee. The compassion and empathy this young boy possesses is far greater than anything I have seen from someone as young as him. He uses words of encouragement and inspiration. When he says, "...we'll be waiting for you guys with flowers and balloons," it melts your heart because of his openness to a stranger. Even though he has never met this young refugee, he still has a sense of optimism and empathy. This is not the whole letter but just this one page says a lot about this young boys character. When he talks about introducing him to his other Syrian friend, he just shows his empathy. I am sorry for using that word so many times but it is just out of this world that he even thought about how the boy would feel when he would arrive. He knew he was going to be lonely and wanted to make sure he had a friend he had something in common with, like nationality. Especially now in this war we are having in America about the refugee crisis, this young boys words are more inspirational, more loving, and more empathetic than many people well into their lives are still trying to reach.

Johnathon Gibbs

Writing is expressing ideas, thoughts and feelings in the present moment about ones individual beliefs of life using their own resources .

The post says, "You only know a part of me. I am a universe full of secrets." As I searched for an inspiring post, I came across this simple yet meaningful post. It relates a lot to my idea of writing. Writing is a tool that allows us to express our own thoughts and beliefs to ourselves or almost to the entire world. We live in a society that is so structured to be a certain way and that everyone should share similar beliefs in order to fit in but writing does the complete opposite. It shows how different everyone else is and that even though we might think we share a same thought with someone reality is that it is completely different once you begin to discuss it in further details. For example in this post, even though the quote seems simple and not difficult to understand, each individual that will come across it will think about it differently. Someone might use it as a way to feel unique and empowering that no one really knows them and it creates a mysterious feel. However, someone else might come across of feeling of sadness because they realize that they may never find someone who will ever understand them and that is not what they want. Each person will have their own thought about this post and from there their thoughts will began to unravel through writing.

Tatiana Hernandez

Writing is a way to convey ideas and emotions without speaking.

I found a piece of the original speech given by Franklin D. Roosevelt after the attack on Pearl Harbor. I find this very interesting because not only is it a major part of American history, but this particular picture shows the changes that the speech went through to reach its final form. This speech conveyed anger, vengeance and strength to its audience. Americans were quickly assured that they would have their revenge and that they should not be fearful. Roosevelt used strong and direct language such as “infamy” and “deliberate” and kept the speech short. He did this to make his purpose very clear and convey his straight-to-the-point attitude about his subject.

-Dalton Broadway

Writing is using words to expressing something, tell a story, or share an experience.

I chose a Birthday Card as my form of writing. It is expressing love and thanks for someone, while also celebrating their being born. Lots of kind, loving words are used in birthday cards to show appreciation for people and why they are important to you. Birthday cards are usually pretty short, because cards are a standard size, but a letter can be added if you really feel the need to express your thanks for someone. Cards are really neat writing because of the feeling that someone gets when they read it. They feel appreciated and worth more than they thought.
