Consequences for English-French Relations

Both groups had different views on the war. English-Canadians thought that war was a great idea because they could show their loyalty to Britain while also receiving regular pay. For one family that had immigrated to Canada, the war would prove to be beneficial. Reginald and Hester Heath moved to Canada with their three daughters and took up jobs working on a farm and doing laundry. These types of jobs did not pay well and they were struggling. In a bid to increase their income Reginald enlisted in the war, he thought that it would be an opportunity to see Britain again and also have a decent income. This was the way that most British Canadians thought of the war, but they did not realize that war could be very horrific to soldiers and their families. French-Canadians had a different outlook. The majority of them did not want to take part in war. French-Canadians considered themselves to be Canada while the English-Canadians considered themselves British. The French-Canadians were more concerned about the effects that war would have on Canada while the English-Canadians mostly cared about how Britain would benefit from the war. French-Canadians were often told by other ethnicity groups in Canada that they were unloyal but the truth is that they were looking out for Canada’s best interest. In conclusion, World War I resulted in consequences for French-Canadians and English-Canadians.

Some of these consequences were positive and some were negative. Many people that worked in Canada did not have a decent income. Families struggled to make ends meet and it was difficult to find jobs. The war was beneficial because it provided men with a steady income that they could use to provide for their families in Canada. However, workers that remained in Canada that did not go to war had a more difficult time making enough money to provide for their families. Farmers faced many challenges because the majority of young men working in the fields had gone off to war and it was almost impossible to run a farm by yourself. Overall, workers in Canada faced many difficulties because of the war but many also were able to benefit from the war.

The majority of soldiers that came home faced crippling PTSD (also known as shell shock) as well as physical disabilities. Many soldiers found it difficult to cope and adjust to their new life. This also had a huge impact on the families of these soldiers because they had to care for these soldiers on a daily basis. Many of these men could not work so it was difficult for families to have a stable income. The women and children (if they were old enough) had to find jobs working in factories and farms while also trying to make sure their husband or son was accommodated well while they recovered. It was also very expensive for the families to seek help or treatment for the soldier who had returned home. In conclusion, war had a huge negative impact on soldiers as well as their families when they returned home.

These consequences were both positive and negative. Once the men were off to war they were forced to run the household and take care of the children on their own. They often had to get jobs so that they could make ends meet. Many manufacturers and farmer owners were getting desperate to find people to work because the majority of men were off at war. When women starting working there were protests all over Canada because many people felt that women should not work and that they should maintain their role as a housewife. Women working would ultimately increase the economic growth of Canada and it would also change the makeup of the workforce. Due to war women also received the right to vote, although only women that were directly affected by the war could vote. This would help Canadian women to have a newfound sense of confidence and freedom that they had not had before and their voices were finally being heard. Many women also volunteer to be nurses overseas. This was a dangerous job but it also came with many rewarding experiences. Although there were many positives to war, many women were faced with dealing with the death of their loved ones overseas and having to raise their family on their own. In conclusion, the war had many positive and negative impacts on women.

Canadian soldiers were often forced to the front lines of many gruesome battles and they had to prove that they could work hard and win the battles. Canadian soldiers were one of the most hardworking soldiers, they tried to the best of their ability to fight for Britain’s honour even if they were against the idea of war. Many of the battles that were won by the British were often fought by the Canadians. Canadian troops were able to push the Germans out of the Hindenburg line, which would lead to Britain's victory in the war. The war was costing Canada a lot of money that they did not have. The government had to find a way of creating revenue. They came up with three major ways of increasing revenue: They sold government bonds to investors, offered victory bonds to the general public, and the government created a direct tax (which was the first of its kind in Canada). These means of revenue are still around to this day, especially tax. Since World War I Canada has had a tax that affects almost everyone. It is evident that war had a major impact on Canada because the government became so desperate to make money that they would exploit their own people to get what they needed.

Based on the information below, I think that World War I was not worth it. Although there were some benefits such as; women's rights improving and Canada being recognized as an independent nation. There were far too many irreparable consequences such as PTSD for returning soldiers, farmers not being able to run their farms properly, and the English and French Canadians relationship becoming tense. Overall, World War I did not benefit Canada and caused more harm then good.

Nobody respected them the way that white people were respected. They often had to work very difficult jobs and they were not compensated properly. When World War I started anyone that belonged to these ethnicity groups was not allowed to enlist. The government did not want anyone that "did not look Canadian" to enlist because they wanted to be represented by white men only. However, less and less people were enlisting in the war and the government was becoming very desperate for more people to enlist. This is when the government slowly started allowing men that were of different ethnicity's to enlist. This made Black/Chinese/Native Canadians enthusiastic because they would finally be able to do their part and pledge their loyalty to Canada. These men were some of the hardest working men in the war, they sacrificed more than anybody else. They were respected more by the people around them but when they got back home they were treated the exact same. In conclusion, Black/Chinese/Native Canadians were not treated properly by the government. The government only used them for their own personal gain and after that neglected to acknowledge their terrific efforts in the war. These men of different ethnicity's did gain some respect from the people around them but not enough to make a real difference.
