These are called sports. Sports are very popular in different countries, and many sports are different. 
  For example, organized soccer  games (the name "soccer", most likely coming from  an abbreviation of "assoc")  began in 1863, and in 1930 (67 years after) the world cup started. Every four years, teams gather around to try and win this  competition. Soccer is a very popular sport, with more than 140 countries playing it. It even is the national sport of many European and Latin American countries. Some may consider Soccer to be the most popular sport in the world.
  However, the most popular soccer player in the world goes by the name of Pele. This player lives in Brazil, and has dazzling and admirable footwork. He played for 22 years, and had scored about 1,280 goals. He also has every big record for soccer. 
  And in 1891, basketball was created by a physical education teacher in Massachusetts, by the name of James Naismith. His employer asked him to make a game that students would be able to play in bad weather. He had succeeded, and created a game that wasn't as rough as soccer, football, or wrestling by attaching two peach baskets ten feet above the gym's floor at opposite ends and grabbed a soccer ball for the game. While deciding the rules, Naismith decided having five players on each team would reduce injuries.
  Fast-forwarding two years (1893) metal hoops with net bags replaced the basket, and in 1913, bottomless nets were introduced, which is what we use today. 
  By the 1900's, the game (basketball) Naismith made became the most popular indoor sport, with about 130 countries playing it, though, it's played a bit more in the United States, China, and Puerto Rico. You play basketball by throwing the ball into the hoops at the opposite ends of the court. If a player does get the basketball into the hoop, the team scores a point. 
   With another popular sport that started in the United States in the early 1800's, is Baseball. Many people believe that Abner Doubleday invented said game, however, some do not. Some say that the game came from a similar but early game called Rounders. However, in Rounders, it is played differently. The field players throw the ball right at the "runner", and if it hits him or her (the runner) they are out. In baseball, a field player just needs to touch the ball to base in order to take the runner out. However, baseball is a bit rough, so players use special equipment to reduce injuries. Field players use and wear baseball gloves in order to protect their hands, while the catcher uses a metal mask to protect their face, a chest protector, and shin guards. Batters use plastic helmets in order to protect their heads. It is so popular, that every spring in the U.S, people (of all ages) play baseball at their local baseball fields. Some even called Baseball "The National Pastime of the United States".
