Alternative input devices, eye-gaze systems, and other highly advanced options are available for students with severe disabilities. Because technology is ever-changing, the list of specific devices which might benefit students must be developed individually.

For both functional and academic skills, the sue of technology allows teachers to access more information in a variety of different modalities that previously may not have been available.

Video modeling and video prompting are both research-based practices that have been proven effective. In practice this can be a student viewing a video of either a task being performed or a prompt being given. Then, he or she models or adjusts his or her behavior accordingly and the technology can be naturally faded until it is no longer needed.

Implementation of Instructional Technology can be challenging because while teachers are encouraged to do so often, they must remain mindful of the purpose, function, and rationale. Using the SAMR model is a practice which involves multiple levels of effectiveness. Substitution refers to portions of or entire activities being substituted online with no functional difference taking place. Augmentation refers to the function of the activity being improved with the implementation of technology. Modification refers to technology allowing for a lesson to be reimagined and transformed. Redefinition refers to an activity being so completely altered by technology that it previous would have been impossible.
