Celie was a poor and uneducated fourteen-year-old black woman, living in Georgia in the early 1900's. She started writing letters to God because her stepfather beated and raped her after Celie's mother became ill.
She gave birth to two children (who are from Alphonso, her stepfather) and Alphonso killed the first one and maybe gave the other one to a family.
Then, Celie and Nettie learnt that a man wanted to marry Nettie and he had a mistress, Shug Avery, who kind of fascinates Celie. Alphonso refused to let Nettie to Mr. and offered Celie. But she was going to be abused by her husband for years. But Shug Avery was going to help her to be strong and independant.
The color purple is about the fact that we have to keep fighting and stay strong.

The power of the writing

In the book, Celie doesn't have her own voice so she used letters to find it. She expressed herself and even confessed her feelings like pain, love, and faith. Which led to her spiritual development and her independance, it is only because she decided to write.
Letters are also about the power of communication, it helped her finding a confident who was God because she had no one to talk to.
Letters, like a diary, can be used to express feelings for different situations to understand them better. Writing can also be a kind of therapy.
Alice Walker wrote in a realistic writing style and this is why Celie has a poor grammar and spelling because she is uneducated. It shows the reality of society at that time. But by learning using language Celie could used it as a weapon.

To be honest, I don't know how to feel about this book. First, it wasn't what I had expected. And I really didn't like the writing style, it is not that it was complicated to understand. It is just that I don't usually read books which are written the way The color purple is.
It wasn't written to be beautiful, just the reality.
But I really like the topics which are tough but really important. I think books can educate people, so this one can teach us life of these women in the early 1900's.
