In the last few years, veganism has exploded in popularity. It has developed from the early beginnings in the hippie-culture of the sixties to the worldwide phenomenon we see today.
There are countless websites and blogs that discuss the merits, thousands of videos online and the supermarket shelves are packed with vegan products.
We see it as healthy and good for the environment. But is it?

Proponents of the vegan lifestyle say it helps with weight-management or weight-loss. That a vegan diet reduces heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol. They see it as good for the environment because it reduces animal farming and therefore it is humane because it doesn’t harm animals. But now there is evidence that a vegan diet is not as healthy as first claimed. And that, in fact,
it is actually bad for the environment.
One of the main issues with a vegan diet is that there is a lack in certain vitamins.
For people eating a regular omnivore diet — people who eat food extracted from plants and animals — they rarely suffer from any vitamin deficiency.

But vegans often have a great deal less vitamin B12 and vitamin D in their system. Vitamin B12 can be found in meat, fish, dairy products and eggs. The kind of food that a vegan doesn’t eat. A plant-based diet lacks any vitamin D at all.

This can lead to problems such as tiredness, confusion and muscle weakness. It can also cause depression and weakness in the bones.

In a world full of changes, it might be time we change ourselves to help our planet that is being faced with severe environmental problems. However, what if there was a solution to this problem? Adopting a plant-based diet could be the solutions to many of our environmental problems for many reasons. In fact, you cannot call yourself an environmentalist if you are still eating a meat-based diet. Going vegan will help our planet in numerous ways. The meat industry is one of the main sources of greenhouse gases and is also one of the reasons why we are using our natural resources in an abusive way while ruining our oceans killing animal species.

Firstly, the meat industry is the largest source of greenhouse gases and it will just get worse if we do not do anything. The problem is that humans are trying to find other solutions than changing their diet because they do not realize that the simple fact of eating meat on a weekly basis is polluting the air on a whole other level. In fact, 18 % of total greenhouse gases such as methane, dioxide carbon and nitrous oxide come from animal agriculture, 13 % from meat transportation and 51 % from livestock and by-product. In addition, it would be important to mention that switching to a vegan diet is a more efficient solution than the actions that are being promoted by the government such as turning off your lights and not letting your can run for no reason. Even buying a hybrid car is not as helpful as going vegan. Therefore, we can say without any doubt, that the solution is right in front of our eyes.

Secondly, our natural resources are being used in a costly and inefficient way. Producing meat uses way more water than producing plant based foods. Our water is precious and is sadly being excessively used to produce food when we could be using way less. In fact, producing one pound of pig takes 96 times more water than producing one pound of wheat. agriculture. Although, people still tend to try to find a other solutions instead like converting to solar and wind power but the problem is that the resources will cost around 43 trillions of dollars and will take more than 20 years to install. That being said, it seems hard to disagree that switching to a vegan diet is not the easiest way to save our planet.

Thirdly, our oceans and many species are in danger. Our marine biodiversity is badly affected because 75% of all fisheries around the world are currently being exploited. Nonetheless, many sharks are killed each day in the fishing nets placed by fishers. In addition, species are losing their natural habitats because of deforestation. Deforestation is surpassingly related to the meat industry being this land is being used to build new slaughterhouses.

Furthermore, it may or may not be surprising anymore to say but each year twice the size of Belgium is defenestrated. To sum up, it is not surprising that 825 ecoregions are threatened at the moment and that this solution is the one to choose for the future of the habitat we so gladly share with different species.

In conclusion, veganism is the best solution to all of our problems. The way we eat has many impacts on Earth. The air we breathe, the animals we live with and the water in which we swim will all be protected by one small change is the way you eat. Furthermore, eating a plant-based diet has many effects on your health and your energy. To sum up, I couldn’t see why people would want to be eating their way to disaster.
