Choice boards allow students the visual tools they need in order to complete a task. By using choice boards, a student can demonstrate their understanding of a concept or skill that best represents how they learn. Most students will more motivated and engaged when they have the ability to take ownership of their own learning. Choice boards allow students to work at their own pace and in a way that best fits their personal learning style.

*Picture Dictionary- they will define, illustrate and give an example using the unit's vocabulary. For example, defining addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.

*Create a Collage using the vocabulary words on how we can use it in our every day lives.

*Create a slideshow explaining how to solve problems of their choosing.

*Word Problem Comic- Create a story problem comic showing your understanding of the given topic.

5th Grade Fractions Choice Board

Learning Goal: Students will demonstrate understanding of adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

By using choice boards, I’ve noticed increased motivation, deeper engagement, and more meaningful demonstrations of learning across all ability levels—including my GT students, who often choose the more open-ended, complex tasks.

Student's choices are addressed in the fact that each student chooses the task he/she will complete to show his/her understanding. The fact that they did choose it, ensures the student will be more engaged in the assignment's completion.

Student's readiness is addressed in choice boards if the choice boards icludes various levels of expertise in the given concept. If a student feels that he/she is above level in the specific task, the choice may be one that demands a higher level of presentation of at a much faster pace. If a student does not feel as comfortable, a Choice Board allows for the student to choose a lower level of presentation and perhaps at a much slower pace.

Student's interests are addressed in Choice Boards because it allows for students to choose how their finished product is turned in. If student is very interested in technology, this will, not only allow the student to excell in how he/she presents the finished product, but it also allows them to complete a task while engaging in an interest they already have. Likewise, students with interests in art, music or spatial talent, may use these interests for their final presentation.

Choice Boards are a great tool that allows students and teachers to come together in learning new information, while pursuing individual interests. Student that are given options that foster their choices, readiness and interests are more apt to stay engaged and interested in my instruction and get more out of my class.

Literacy

• Reading: Choose a book and read it in a fun place (e.g., under a blanket, in a fort).

• Phonics: Do a "sounds race" with letter cards, or explore phonics apps or websites.

• Writing: Write a story, a letter to a friend, or create an "all about me" book.

Choice Boards provide students' choice by allowing students to choose how they will complete various assignments. They can choose a method of presentation that allows them to express their individual GT talent.

Choice Boards support GT students' readiness by allowing them to work at a level that they feel comfortable, as well as a level that will challenge them too.

Choice Boards support students' interests by allowing them to choose assignments that will keep them focused and engaged since they chose it themselves.

Overall Choice Boards help GT students because they allow students to tailor both the assignment(s) and finished product based on their individual GT skill.

I use choice boards with my students for example in Language Arts. After completing the reading assignment students have various choices as exit tickets:

It focuses on a specific skills and then has various learning activities within the columns that peaks the students students curiosity or skill. This way each student can feel empowered by their choice.

Design a social media profile for the main character, including posts, friends, and interests. Compare the main character to a character from another book. Use a Venn diagram or write a paragraph. Write a letter from the main character to another character explaining their actions.

Students love the freedom to choose how they demonstrate their learning. Some write directly on their desks with dry-erase markers, others use their notebooks or create posters. As long as they’re using the vocabulary correctly and the content is appropriate, I give them space to be creative. They take a picture of their completed work and upload it to Schoology as evidence. This strategy keeps students highly engaged and allows me to meet their diverse learning needs through voice, choice, and flexibility.

To support differentiation in my dual language 5th grade class, I use a reading choice board that aligns with our fiction unit. The board offers activities at varying levels of complexity and taps into student interests, multiple intelligences, and language development goals.

Here’s a simplified sample of the board (students choose 3 tasks in a tic-tac-toe style):

Choice boards offer students multiple pathways to complete a task or explore a concept. Typically organized in a grid (e.g., 3x3 or tic-tac-toe style), each square presents a different activity aligned to a learning goal. Students may be required to complete a set number of tasks (e.g., three in a row), which gives them a sense of autonomy and ownership over their learning. For example, in a reading unit, students might choose between creating a character diary, designing a comic strip, or writing an alternate ending—all targeting the same comprehension skills.

I often tier the tasks on the choice board to accommodate varying levels of student readiness. Some tasks are more foundational, reinforcing basic understanding, while others require higher-order thinking, synthesis, or application. This allows students to work at a level that challenges them appropriately without causing frustration. For GT students, I include extension tasks that dive deeper into content or encourage cross-curricular thinking (e.g., integrating math and science in a real-world problem-solving activity).

3. Interests

Choice boards also help tap into students' personal interests. I incorporate tasks that allow for creativity and personal connection—for instance, giving students the option to relate a social studies concept to their own family history or to express a science concept through art or technology. This approach increases engagement and motivation by linking learning to what students care about.

Implementation

I use choice boards during independent work time, literacy or math centers, and especially during WIN (What I Need) time. They’re particularly useful for GT students because they promote independence, provide challenge, and respect students’ intellectual curiosity. I monitor student progress through brief check-ins, reflection activities, or rubrics tied to the choice board tasks.

Differentiation with menus involves providing students with choices for their learning activities, similar to how restaurants offer a menu of food options. This allows teachers to cater to diverse learning styles, skill levels, and interests. By offering a variety of activities within a menu, students can select tasks that best suit their needs and preferences, promoting engagement and ownership of their learning. 

I use choice boards for early finishers, WIN time, and math stations. They like STEM ideas to extend their understanding of our reading standards. I also have hands on options during phonics and math. It is easy to create a quick choice board on Canva or even a word document. At the beginning of first grade, I also include pictures with the words to help them pick a choice activity.

Use sprint sheets so that students may make progress at their own pace. Students will be able to monitor their own progress and become familiar with simple addition and will do addition and subtraction problems with automaticity.

In my classroom, I use choice boards to provide students with multiple ways to engage with the content based on their interests, readiness levels, and learning preferences. For example, in a 3rd grade reading lesson on informational text, I create a choice board with nine activities arranged in a tic-tac-toe format. Students are asked to complete three activities in a row, column, or diagonal.

I would create a list of characters or people in any fiction and nonfiction text we read as a class together. They would have the choice to "play" one of the characters and defend their actions in the text whether it be positive or negative.

Teacher provides magazines for students and they use them to find things that are the same color or even the same shape. In order to differentiate, teacher can use templates for lower students, or make it more complex such as requiring writing for students ahead.

In my 3rd grade class, I use a 3x3 reading choice board. The board is tied to our weekly skill, such as text features or author’s purpose. Students choose three activities in a row (tic-tac-toe style), which gives them voice and choice.

Draw and color their animal(using the tools of their choice- color pencils, crayons, markers) and included a written report on the animal.  2.  Write a narrative from the animal’s point of view.  3. Student pretends he/she is a zoologist and write a report on the animal (including behavior and their environments) 4. Extension of zoologist.  Student is being interviewed as a zoologist. This can be a partner project.  One partner will ask the questions.  The other partner will be the one answering the questions as a zoologist.

She researched how weather is different in the Sahara Desert versus Alaska, created a detailed poster showing the temperature ranges and weather patterns in both regions, and presented it to the class. Another student, who loves art and building, opted for “Build a Weather Model” and used clay and fabric to create a model of a storm cloud, explaining its formation and role in weather patterns.

By allowing them to choose activities that align with their strengths and interests, they were both more engaged, produced work they were proud of, and gained a deeper understanding of weather concepts.

1. They need to be independent! I know that sounds like a big “DUH!”, but so often we place new activities in front of kids and wonder why they keep asking us for help. The materials and learning ideas need to be things we’ve already taught them. Things they can do on their own.

2. Learning activities need to be self-checking. This means the child knows where to find the answers to check his own. We definitely don’t want to have our kids practicing skills the wrong way!

3. Kids need to know what you expect. It doesn’t help to have a wonderfully thought-out activity if kids don’t know how you expect them to behave or clean up after themselves. Cleaning 200+ alphabet beads scattered everywhere isn’t the most exciting use of your day. {Ask me how I know.}

Take the time to walk them through your activities and model what you want to see. Give them a chance to try it and give feedback on how they did.

Independent Activities Choice Board

I am VERY passionate about providing kids choices whenever we can. Kids have enough decisions made for them and it’s nice for them to feel some sense of control over what they do. Providing kids choices can also boost their interest and motivation…a HUGE key in learning!

I feel that choice boards are similar to reading centers in that students complete a task in a group setting or at their own pace without any pressure or stress.

For GT students studying the three branches of government, each square offers a distinct activity to explore roles, responsibilities, and interactions of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.

I think choice Boards are useful for all students, not just our GT kids. After reading so many chapters in a classroom novel, students can work on a BINGO card and complete the task of their choosing. The goal would be to get 5 in a row. This allows the teacher to make it a choice for the student but also have control over what product or writing, etc. the student completes.

I use the tik tak toe method. They will complete three to compete the board.

The way I used choice boards is by providing my students with different centers/activities that they can do after they’ve done their work. These centers are divided into different groups by level and labeled so each group knows where they can grab a center from.

Another choice board I do is a HW menu were kids get to choose different activities to practice their tricky words and each activity earns them certain points depending on the level of difficulty.

Students become more engaged and invested in their learnning through the use of choice boards. I strive to return to doing them in the future.

1) Write a program that guides your robotic through a maze while carrying an object to deliver a the end of the maze. The maze will be tricky and require you to plan ahead.

Doing these activities with kindergartners

For example, during our reading unit on informational text, students choose from tasks such as: creating a labeled diagram of the topic, writing a mini-report, filming a short explanation video, building a 3D model of a key idea, or completing a teacher-guided comprehension activity. My GT students often gravitate toward extensions like research-based projects or multimedia explanations, while my students who need more support choose structured tasks with sentence stems or visuals. ELLs benefit from options with pictures and partner-based tasks, and my ASC students stay engaged because they can choose hands-on or highly visual activities that match their strengths.

The choice board promotes engagement because students feel empowered—they aren’t all doing the same worksheet, and they can express what they learned in a way that feels meaningful to them. It also allows me to meet a wide range of learner needs within the same lesson, offering built-in differentiation without stigmatizing any group. Over time, I’ve found that students become more motivated, more independent, and more confident when they are given structured choice in how they learn and show their understanding.

I like to use the Tic-Tac-Toe choice board in my reading instruction. It allows students to identify characters/setting, act out as a skit, create stage/props for story, summarize, and think about different points of views.

Students were able to create a scence of The french colonist trading with natives along the mississippi river. They could use Canva, Powerpoint, or even Minecraft! I have tried to use them during all subject areas. These boards give kids ownership in their learning and they will help them demonstrate the skill in their own way. They can write a letter to a book character, or create puppets to do a retell of the story, use technology apps to represent a story or even to show what they learned about a nonfiction topic, they can expand their creativity by changing the ending to a story. Sometimes they like to build something with leggos or pattern blocks. Spelling activities can be fun with boat words or rainbow writing.

This increases engagement because students feel more ownership of their learning. It also supports different learning needs by allowing struggling students to access simpler tasks while challenging advanced learners with deeper, more creative options.

For example, in a reading unit, my choice board might include 4–6 simple options such as:
