Since I tend to be on the slower side I never have enough time to create pieces that are elaborate or intricate. I also tend to stop myself from doing more expressive or messy pieces because I am a bit of a perfectionist… Even though I really enjoy making and consuming expressive art. Some of this lack of speed comes from not wanting to do ‘shortcuts’ or not wanting to use inspiration, which I know is silly! Finally, I know I am uncomfortable expressing my opinion both verbally and visually, which is something I direly need to overcome. Since what’s the point of art without a voice.

Ultimately, I would love to be a full time freelance artist making my own art but the instability scares me and the whole idea of ‘hustling’ makes me feel drained. That is not to say I don’t have good work ethic just the idea of ‘chasing’ trends or people makes me sad. I hold genuine emotion and connection above all else so sometimes the business side of things kills my motivation. Yes, yes, I know I need to eat but beyond that money has never been a motivator for me. It actually has the opposite effect most of the time. Bonus points if I get to discuss my ideas with someone, talking always helps solidify my understanding and brings new insights.

Once I have a good foundation of ideas I’ll move into the sketching phase where either I draw out a composition that is strongly in my mind or play with different themes/elements I came up with until till I find something usable/interesting. I love symbolism and hidden meanings so if I can I will include them at this point.

Then I choose an approach, digital/traditional, colour/achromatic, media, etc., and begin refining. Sometimes I swap my approach part way through because I’m not getting results I like, which can be a bit frustrating, but ultimately works out (usually!!). And thanks to photos/scanners/printers my work in the other medium is not usually wasted.

Through all of these phase I enjoy receiving feedback, except in rare circumstances when I know that an idea needs more time/effort before other eyes see it. With all feedback, I pay attention to how it makes me feel and use this to help me find the kernel of the issue/miscommunication. I will always consider feedback with an open mind and implement it to see if it is successful. If it isn’t, I will try my best to find an alternate solution to the core problem.

Finally, I prep my work for presentation. Making sure everything is tidy, clean, and following a proper format.
