Walt Whitman was a poet, journalist, and essayist. He is considered a humanist and was part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism. Born in 1819, Whitman looks back at his childhood in great sadness due to the economic status of his family. Whitman created an entirely new writing style, which only became recognized in the later 19th century. During the Civil War, Drum- Taps, which was an elegy for President Lincoln. His writings were whitely centered on the body in inclusion with the soil and found beauty in death and reassurance.

Famous Pieces

Whitman's most famous piece of literature was Leaves of Grass. Leaves of Grass was a collect of Whitman's poems, which celebrated his attraction toward humanity. Within the poetry collection, there is evidence of transcendentalism, especially with the hierarchy of the human mind and spirit. As an important figure in the Civil War as well, Whitman's poem Beat! Beat! Drum! served as an allegiance toward America. Another famous piece by Whitman is Franklin Evans; Or The Inebriate, which was the only novel that Whitman ever wrote. Whitman's characters was mainly priced on the individual and their journey toward finding themselves. Through this idea, his incorporation of both realism and transcendentalism was what shaped Whitman towards an incredible writer.
