Explicit and Implicit Attitudes of Canadian Psychiatrists Toward People With Mental Illness (Layla Dabby, MD1 ; Constantin Tranulis, MD2 ; Laurence J Kirmayer, MD):

Advantages:
-Implications: helps us to understand behaviour and our implicit attitudes and the application to everyday, real life (for example, we now know from the research that if clinicians have negative attitudes towards patients with mental health problems, therefore when training health professionals it is something that needs to be addressed).
-Better than self-report/explicit methods as we eliminate social desirability. Means that it is a different finding.
-Malleable to a wide range of circumstances (e.g. fast food preferences of Asians and Americans).

Disadvantages:
-Found no difference between implicit and explicit attitudes between psychiatrists and psychiatric residents.
-Artifical setting, Artificial stimuli. Behaviour may be different in a more natural setting (Maina et al, 2017 - decade of studying implicit racial/ethnic bias in healthcare providers using the IAT).
- Are we measuring societal norms, beliefs or the associations themselves?
-Lacks construct validity. Might not necessarily be racist but by belonging to a certain group you associate quicker with some things. Familiarity with a group causes quicker association.

- Evidence has been mixed regarding which attitudes (explicit or implicit) motivate one's behavior. This is a major source of IAT's criticism.
- Studies of implicit and explicit attitudes often report a mismatch between the results of both measurements. Evidence suggests that this mismatch is likely due to the different cognitive levels on which these attitudes operate.
- Sensitive to contextual constraints.

Accumulated evidence suggests that indirect measures such as the Implicit Association Test (IAT) provide an increment in personality assessment explaining behavioral variance over and above self-reports. Likewise, it has been shown that there are several unwanted sources of variance in personality IATs potentially reducing their psychometric quality. For example, there is evidence that individuals use imagery-based facilitation strategies while performing the IAT. That is, individuals actively create mental representations of their person that fit to the category combination in the respective block, but do not necessarily fit to their implicit personality self-concept.

Ref: Fleischhauer, M.

- This study shows that when using IAT to measure socially sensitive subjects, the threat of appearing prejudice can cause exaggerated results. Therefore, if not controlled for this phenomenon, the IAT is lacking in ecological validity.
Furthermore, the lack of ecological validity is also demonstrated by the simplicity of the method, that is very far from a real life situation. This could potentially cause ethical problems as if the test was used to change legislation and it was unreliable, it could misrepresent a particular population , which may cause offense and discriminate said.

Strengths:
- It is a way of measuring implicit biases which the participant is not consciously aware of so, without the IAT they would not realize they have an implicit bias.

- It is useful in understanding a person's bias in socially sensitive research. Often if you told someone to express their true thoughts on something like racism then they are likely to lie to look good (social desirabiltiy). The IAT makes it harder to fake your biases.

- Only takes a few minutes to do and can be easily replicated so you can get a large sample size.

Weaknesses:
- I think there is a flaw in the IAT in that you are tasked with matching positive or negative adjectives with specific people. Then after some practice, the test asks you to flip the adjectives and people. This means you have to relearn how to do the test so it will naturally take longer and this may affect the results. It doesn't necessarily mean the person is biased towards a particular group. Relearning may be a confounding variable.

Pros

o Immune to manipulation, unlike the survey questions where the appearance of the enumerator has a strong effect on participant responses. This is thought to be due to the unobservability of sorting latencies.

o A decrease in demand characteristics as participants cannot fake their results.

o A meta-analysis on the IAT has shown that the test provides modest predictions of behaviour, which are better than self-reports.

Cons

o There is no explanation for peoples answers of the IAT (their possible experiences, where they got their prejudices from, etc).

o The study is not replicable, as you can repeat it and each time will get you contradictory evidence.

Cons: in some studies in order to reduce bias, researchers may not fully inform participants of their aims for the study. This thus poses ethical implications as participants cannot fully give consent.

Beyond these good and bad features, implicit bias also contains an ugliness. By focusing on individuals as the primary site for solutions, implicit bias depoliticises gender inequity, shifting focus away from the historical, social, structural, and political contexts in which those inequities are produced and maintained.
