She was born on September 25, 1963 in Washington D.C. While growing up, Andrea’s parents were extremely involved in the civil rights movement. From a young age she enjoyed reading and writing. Though her dreams did not include writing books but instead writing for magazines. Therefore, she attended and graduated from Syracuse University in 1985 with a degree in journalism. She went on to work as an editor at Mechanix Illustrated and then at Essence magazine. Here is where she found her calling. At Essence, she was tasked with finding a list of African American children's books. When publishers failed to have any to send her, she was then influenced to create them herself. With her husband’s support, she attained a job at Simon & Schuster and began her career as an author. In 1993, with her husband by her side, the book ‘Alvin Ailey’ was written. They collaborated with her writing and him illustrating. She has written over thirty-five books for children and young adults, including novels, picture books, biographies, historical fiction, and nonfiction. Andrea continues to write books and is an editor at a label called Jump at the Sun. Andrea continues to use her books to inspire others by representing African Americans' cultural heritage and achievements.

The book gives insight into how Harriet overcame the challenges of being an African American in the 1800s when slavery was legal. She was born into slavery but dreamed of having wings and being free. Harriet rendered the courage to escape her life as a slave and used the north star's light to guide her way to freedom. She was also guided by brave individuals that were associated with the underground railroad. Once to freedom, she was uneasy about leaving her family and many others to the devastating life as a slave. She ultimately became one of the most well-known and successful conductors of the underground railroad. This book does an amazing job of telling Harriet Tubman's life. The story is told from Amira's point of view and tells of her journey. She has dreams of attending a Gad Primary school but with a traditional mother, this does not appear to be in her future. Amira's life is shattered when her Sudanese village is overtaken by the Janjaweed Militia. After the attack, Amira and others from her village are then forced to seek safety at an overcrowded refugee camp. She faces struggles and heartache but finds comfort when she is gifted a red pencil and a yellow pad. This gift revives her desire to learn as well as freely express herself. The book tells the story of Martin visiting Memphis due to sanitation workers striking. The poems powerfully explain how Martin was feeling ill but pushed through. He pushed through and gave his last speech "I've seen the promised land". His assassination occurred and a man was arrested and found guilty. Although it remains a mystery if the correct man was sentenced. This book is powerful and meaningful and chill-inducing. The diary belongs to Dawnie Rae Johnson. It is her story of becoming the first African American in her county to attend a white-only school in 1954. Dawnie is smart and wishes to become a doctor. Due to segregation, Dawnie attends a colors-only school. The inside and outside of her school are worn down. The clocks do not work and the books are ripped and missing pages. Life changes for Dawnie when the Supreme Court rules in favor of desegregation. She will be the only African American in her town to leave her school to then attend the previously only-whites school, Prettyman Coburn. Her town is outraged but she is eager to receive a well-rounded education. She is faced with the harsh realities of racism inside the school as well as outside of school. While viewing her books, I observed that they were all associated with African American cultural heritage and had meaning. This drew me in and led me to want to read her books. I also wanted to learn what influenced her to write this style of books. After researching, I believe I have found a great author that writes interesting, educational, and powerful books. I find it amazing that she is able to take history and uses it to create books that children will find appealing. I could see myself using her books in my classroom, no matter what grade I teach. Her books are very educational and unique. I enjoyed that the book focused on Dawnie's life and the challenges she faced in school and outside of school. It gave realistic details of the realities of racism at that time. It spoke so true to how the times were that the story could be mistaken for a true story. It also gave details on not only Dawnie's experience but her family's experience as well. 

Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. It was so touching and infuriating all at the same time. I recommend everyone to read this book at least once. In a classroom setting, I believe this book would catch students' interest and attention. While also educating them about the struggles of African Americans during the time of the civil rights movement.
